So does this last 8 hrs by itself with just that addon battery on the bottom? Or does this require a delta 2/max?

I don't know about other wave 2 owners but beware of an issue with the inaccurate ambient temperature, it's way off. Purchased a refurb off of them from eBay, the units are like new; went through 3 exchanges. There's definitely quality control issues but customer service is good, they're very responsive in my experience. First unit I reported ambient temp reading issue, they exchanged it. 2nd one arrive with a display issue, the characters had weird speckles and also the ambient temp issue. 3rd one also ambient temp issue. I also noticed the unit will continue to run past the set temp in either cool or heat mode. Finally requested a refund. If the temp sensor wasn't an issue, it would've been a great unit.
