I think with the announcement of the mk II 24-70, that may be the reasoning of the discount of the original. I think this is a great deal because the 28-70 f2.8 is around this price used.

24 vs 28mm is a significant difference, 70 vs 75 not so much. Perhaps you have a wide angle already and don't "need" the 24mm.

Other than that, the Sigma is more expensive, heavier, larger, and seems to have a better built and a nicer bokeh / out-of-focus rendering.

just bought the tamron :/ happy with the weight (actually kinda heavy for me) - this sigma is 300g more.

Pretty solid deal. New sigma 24-70 II was just announced a few days ago which will be priced at $1200. Reviews seem to indicate its not a huge improvement optically.

I originally bought the Sigma, but returned it for the Tamron 28-75 G2 and haven't regretted it one bit. The weight of the Sigma was significantly heavier. The Tamron build quality is excellent, and the lens seems to focus faster than the Sigma. I didn't need the extra 4mm. I don't think you can go wrong with either lens.

Optically not a whole lot, but far faster focusing and a lot lighter. Those two factors will likely get you far more keepers. I am a canon shooter, so I have no stake in this lens or the new one.. just pointing out a couple of meaningful advantages for the new version.

Having said that the older version is a very capable lens, and a very good value at this reduced price.

i have weak wrists so i prefer light weight lens. I initially thought of 35 150mm samyang but its a brick...

Yes! I have that lens but it's a struggle at times to balance it!
