I have one of these. Nice knife, but the bolster makes it impossible to sharpen properly (i.e., down the whole length of the blade). If that matters to you, don't buy such a heavily bolstered knife.

Yep that's why I went for their Classic Ikon instead in a previous deal. It's only a few bucks more but it also gives you a much nicer and ergonomic handle and a half bolster which fixes the sharpening issues that this other knife has. Also not having a full bolster gives you back some cutting edge and in turn makes cutting things more effortless and efficient.

Majority of people do not need this. It's overkill. Learn to cook first instead of ordering out every night.
I'd say a good knife is a good investment. This is kind of a buy it for life kinda knife. The steel is pretty hard and they really don't need as much sharpening. And if they don't end up learning, they can cosplay as a chef with a nice knife https://i.slickdeals.net/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
