Do you think they would handle bad weather well? Thinking about the same as a casual shoe in the fall/winter in MI. But if they are thin or not built as well, it wouldn't work.

Yes. The strap end loops around an eye and attached with velcro. I have a few pairs of forums and swap the straps around or remove them.
