Link works for me, and while I didn't check out it didn't seem like they verified student status before the final submit order step. May work for non students. Maybe not the most ethical if you're a non student although I'm sure other retailers will have it similarly discounted for general public soon enough. Best Buy is already running discounts on the new iPad Pro, for example.

Yes, Juggernaut_510 is correct. Apple's education store is always an option; and they have educational discounts on many of their products, not just iPad. Since that's permanent pricing on the education store, it's not usually considered a 'deal'.

Reports stating there is no verification are 'kind-of' true. I won't delve in the ethics of claiming student discount when ineligible, but from a purely practical consideration, there are some things to be aware of -

To be eligible for education pricing, you need to be a student in a higher education institution (or a parent purchasing on behalf of the student). Or you need to be a teacher in a K-12 institution, or, faculty member of higher education etc.
Anybody can indeed order via the education store online, and Apple does not usually check. But doing so while being ineligible is obviously against their terms and conditions.
Their terms clearly state that they have the right to request proof of eligibility even after the purchase, and will charge your credit card for the difference if you cannot show proof. And if you didn't pay by credit card, they can invoice you and sue you if you do not pay. I have no clue whether they actually request people to show proof; just saying their terms state that to be the case..
I don't know whether they sometimes request ID when doing in-store pickup., But when shopping in store with a student discount, they often request proof. (Incidental story - Once my wife happened to impluse buy something from the Apple store and she didn't have her student ID with her. The person on the floor requested her to log into her university system and show that she's a current student taking classes. She did so and showed the class schedule or something on her phone, and they accepted it).
Be careful abusing the system during back-to-school or thanksgiving sales. I believe if they request proof later and you cannot show it, they will charge you the full amount for any gift-card that might have come with the purchase, and any free included item (airpods etc.).

I think education verification depends on the store. I've had one store ask for my school ID once I picked up and another store not ask me for it. Just a heads up!!
