Backup camera to be required on 2014 light vehicles

Government regulators this week will propose a final rule requiring all passenger cars to have backup cameras starting with 2014 models, according to a report today in the N.Y. Times. The rule may be published as early as Wednesday it says,

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration first proposed a preliminary rule in December of 2010 to require backup warning systems. It has since taken public comment and has worked with automakers to come up with the final rule, which largely follows the initial proposal.



Facepalm. The automakers of course profiteer on those extremely expensive LCD screens.

Unfortunately, parents will continue to run over their kids accidentally despite the implementation of the system.

Manufacturers will gut the interior build/quality even further. Consumers will tolerate only so much... when it comes to price.

Those are much better more cost effective (couple hundred bucks tops) and actually get your attention.

Yep. Is there a study that says these things actually lead to fewer injuries? The proponents of this seem to be talking about the number of deaths from back-up accidents (which is quite small) as though 100% of them will be stopped with back-up cameras. Hopefully this doesn't pass through congress...

I don't understand why we need this. Oh wait a minute, we don't. Might help in parallel parking situations though. Yet still another reason not to buy a new car. Would make more sens if they were only required on trucks and SUV's.

I also prefer the backup sensor... easier to use in conjunction with your eyes while actually paying attention to your surroundings. Cameras require you to take your eyes off the road and interpret what you see in a small screen.

Saw talk of this of MAD MONEY last year invested in a few companies that will be making the Parts. $$$$

My worry is the Governments Alterior motive behind this, today its Back up cameras, Which will capture all sorts of Funny Accidents for TRUTV and worlds dumbest drivers. But What else will they record? What About Madating Forward facing CAmeras??? All in the name of "Saftey"

The door is wide open now to mandate your car to be camera filled.

DMV procedure is to look backward while reversing. I'm not sure how one looks back and at a tiny LCD screen in front at the same time!

Stupid rule, but I must admit, I really enjoyed having one in my last rental car.

I surely hope not...i bought one aftermarket for $75 and installed it myself, similar to this one [buy.com].
