Obama: "If You’ve Got A Business. You Didn’t Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen" It's a furtherance of the talking points popularized by Native American by virtue of "high cheekbones" Professor, Senate Candidate, and Obama assistant Elizabeth Warren, designed to belittle individual accomplishment, and insinuate the only thing standing between similar success for anyone, is their failure to receive the same support. It's classic liberal anti individual exceptionalism. You aren't special, just because you excelled. You were just lucky to be here instead of in Somalia. Others got you to where you are. If you succeed a great deal, you really don't deserve it. Your success belongs to everyone else. Give most of it back! It's also the ultimate liberal strawman. That conservatives don't believe in paying taxes, or giving back anything. It's been at the forefront of the liberal talking points. Several of the representatives here have been repeating it ad nauseum. Here's the president's comments. I think it's pretty easy to see his true political ideology.
“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.”

I was reading an article similar to this line of thinking from Mises on Equality and Inequality:
|
|
|
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own."
I actually think what's going on here is Obama going off the teleprompter and getting ahead of himself, as he tends to do when he's not working off of a script. I think his point was 'if you have a business, you didn't build the roads on which your commerce depends'. That said even though I perceive this as a slip of the tongue, I don't think it really clashes with his true feelings. The “vice of specialization” entails the denial of intellect. “It is a denial because it rests on the superstition that understanding is identical with professional skill. The universal formula is: ‘You cannot understand or appreciate my art (science) (trade) unless you practice it.’ ” - Jacques Barzun |

It's a little long, but interesting. Another point I enjoyed was the hypocracy of some on the progressive left when they chide common man's behavior as a consumer and the alleged evils of advertising that convince them to buy things they don't really want or need (bascially calling him an idiot), while at the sametime traditional socialist virtues promote that same man as having the highest moral character and intellect. It's got to be one or the other folks. Either he's an idiot slave to marketing and has no business controlling the means of production, or he's not, and adverstising isn't as bad as they make it out to be. |

This is how liberals feel in my experience. Everyone is a victim of circumstance. The poor are unlucky, the wealthy are lucky. What they think they are doing is spreading the luck around.
This quote is a perfect nugget of wisdom from Obama. I believe this is exactly how he feels, and would go further in saying most liberals agree with him. They do not understand what building a business means (not that I'm an entrepreneur myself, yet anyway). I know McMahon lost the election but this debate moment is another microcosm of liberal thought: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jkU3RSfDGE Last edited by Xygonn; 07-17-2012 at 08:58 AM.. I got comparisons coming out my ears and she never can hit the pause
If only Morrissey weren't so Morrissey-esque she might overlook all my flaws So lighten up Morrissey |

The difference is, I pay a significant share of my income back in taxes that goes to those kind of folks. Obama want's more from me, and tells the lazy and non-productive, that it's not their fault they don't have as much as I do. |

You are bound by the limitations and capabilities of where you live.
That being said, people in developing countries do plenty of amazing things to overcome the lack of infrastructure and general calmness and security we take for granted http://images.businessweek.com/ss...eurs/1.htm With TONS of other examples. |

There was an article in the WSJ in 2007 or 08 that made the case that what we might call the 'advocates of growth' had been in power for a generation or so, and with that movement having run its course, we would face slower growth in the coming years as what we might call the 'advocates of government' or the 'advocates of equality' gained and solidified their power. Here we are. |
