I was a good loser four years ago. “In the grand scheme of history,” I wrote the day after Barack Obama’s election as president, “four decades is not an especially long time. Yet in that brief period America has gone from the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. to the apotheosis of Barack Obama. You would not be human if you failed to acknowledge this as a cause for great rejoicing.”

Yet the question confronting the country nearly four years later is not who was the better candidate four years ago. It is whether the winner has delivered on his promises. And the sad truth is that he has not.

In his inaugural address, Obama promised “not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth.” He promised to “build the roads and bridges, the electric grids, and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.” He promised to “restore science to its rightful place and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost.” And he promised to “transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age.” Unfortunately the president’s scorecard on every single one of those bold pledges is pitiful...

The article goes on and on.. on what he has promised and what has occurred. Finally some Pro-Obama person actually sat down and evaluated his job performance over the past 4 years. The author did exactly what Obama instructed the entire American public to do.. hold him accountable. I doubt any other media outlets will follow this trend of using promising and evaluating performance.. but it's nice to see someone other than Fox call him out on his record.

The author of the piece was a McCain advisor (for a while, anyway), no? He acknowledges in the opening paragraph that he was "a good loser" four years ago, so at the least it seems like he voted against Obama in 2008.

I think that most are not surprised that Niall Ferguson wrote this, but that it appears on the cover of Newsweek.

From my perspective, the choice is: should you support the person who tried to do the right things for the right reasons and failed..

It pains me to think of how differently things could be - economically and culturally - if the Republican party was guided by honest principles than pure politics. Principles and ideas can be debated honestly, but muck-throwing gets far more attention.

As you say. My post wasn't meant to change anyone's opinion. It is just how I see it. But yes from my perspective, one side has been trying to fix things, and the other has been studying Machiavelli.

Through the power of reading the first line of the article I was able to suss out that this is not an Obama supporter changing direction, but an Obama critic holding course. Truly, who could have predicted such a thing?
