The holiday season is coming up fast, which means its time to start thinking about Black Friday sales. Walmart is one of the best places to score great doorbuster deals on TVs, electronics, home goods and more, which makes its Black Friday ad release all the more exciting. To help you keep your shopping strategy tight, we're offering up our best Walmart Black Friday predictions for 2019.
Walmart has a history of leaking its ad two weeks prior to Thanksgiving, and on Wednesday nights specifically. The retailer's previous reveals came on November 9th in 2016, November 8th in 2017 and November 7th last year. Based on this trend, we expect the 2019 ad scan to be released late in the evening on Wednesday, November 13th.
If previous years are any indication, Walmart will most likely open its doors nationwide at 6 p.m on Thanksgiving Day. Last year, several participating stores even offered hot cocoa and cookies to people waiting in line starting at 4 p.m. local time — the event was deemed the first-ever "Light Up Black Friday" party.
Friday's hours usually vary, so be sure to check with your local Walmart before heading out. Many Walmart locations have simply remained open through Friday in years past.
Last year, key departments — like toys, electronics, home and apparel — were color-coded throughout the store with balloons and signs to help customers navigate the sale. Walmart also had "Check Out With Me" associates placed throughout stores to make payment faster.
In 2018, Walmart's online sale started two hours earlier than usual, with deals going live at 10 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. CT. We expect the retailer to keep its hours roughly the same this year — perhaps with an even earlier start time.
Keep in mind you can either make a $35 minimum purchase for free shipping or opt for free in-store pickup for eligible items.
It's also a good idea to be on the lookout for early Walmart Black Friday deals. Last year, the store offered 18 Black Friday deals on its website starting November 8th. Here's hoping we see 19 online exclusives leading up to this year's big event.
Walmart is known for offering competitive holiday prices on TVs and tech, and we fully expect its upcoming Black Friday sale to deliver the goods.
Here are some of the highlights from last year's ad to give you an idea of what to expect:
Online + In-Store Deals
In-Store Only Deals
While these sales were all pretty good, other retailers had comparable prices (like Target's Element 55" Smart 4K UHD TV for $199.99). Be sure to compare ads before you buy and don't base your purchase on price alone. Some of the steepest discounts are typically on off-brand models, and size can make a world of difference. (At Slickdeals, our advice is to always buy the largest TV you can afford.)
Are you in need of a phone upgrade? Last year, Walmart lured customers in with $300 to $400 Walmart gift cards given out with the purchase of select Apple and Samsung smartphones via payment plans. This was $100 more than it offered in 2017, and it made Target's $150 to $300 gift cards for the same devices seem less than generous.
Walmart also had a Shark Navigator Lift-Away Pet Vacuum on sale for $88, which was competitive with Kohl's price of $99 plus $15 Kohl's Cash. And while the $99 Tasty 30-Pc. Cookware Set may not sound too impressive, it actually came with a free Google Home Mini.
That said, Kohl's and Target both had Walmart beat on select items last year. For instance, all three retailers offered the Microsoft Xbox One S 1TB Minecraft Creators Bundle for the same price, but Kohl's tossed in $60 in Kohl's Cash rewards. Target, on the other hand, added a $20 Target gift card.
The same was true for the Fitbit Versa Smartwatch (which came with $45 Kohl's Cash) and the Google Home Hub Smart Screen (which came with $30 Kohl's Cash). The lesson here? It definitely pays to shop around.
The best time to shop Walmart's Black Friday sale this year will probably depend on what you want to buy.
In 2018, the store's online sale went live at 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday night (which would put this year's online event starting around the same time on November 27th). Many items are available on the store's website, so this is probably the best shopping strategy overall.
Some items, however, tend to sell out relatively fast online — and a few deals are usually in-store only. If a trip to the store is necessary to get your holiday must-haves, then plan on arriving before doors open on Thanksgiving Day.
