Recent reviews seem to indicate the router Amazon is shipping is the Mediatek based R6700v2, which does not support DD-WRT or OpenWRT. The original R6700 is Broadcom based.

DD-WRT forum user "broly" was working on a DD-WRT build last year and said he had it "nearly booting." LINK [dd-wrt.com]. There has been no update on that since October.

Guys, there's a dns service problem on this router (r6700v2 only). The dns service daemon on this router would crash every X hours if you have certain clients connected.

What this means:
You will not be able to use the internet normally. For example, visiting a website via its domain name would not work if the domain is not already resolved and cached locally, but for websites with static ip address and dedicated hosts you would still be able to visit them by an ip address.

Solution:

Use this router strictly as an access point and pair it with an existing gigabit router (feel free to disable the wifi on the gateway router, or broadcast on a different channel). Google netgear access point mode to see step by step instructioin.

You could take it up to netgear support, but it seems like people are getting nowhere with netgear support providing useless troubleshooting steps that is not relevant whatsoever.

Or just return it to avoid all the troubles.

Warning this is going to be the 6700v2 which changed from a Broadcom chip to a MediaTek chip and the reviews look pretty bad on the v2 model. It's a slickdeal if this was still v1, but I'd avoid the potential headache looking at the reviews personally.
Bought that router a year ago for the same price, now you get a free modem!! Router has been rock solid, btw..
Netgear routers have a terrible security record, just an FYI before buying.

Wasn't that in 2016, and the security patches were rolled out last year? Good point though, everyone should keep their router firmware up to date.

Great price for this combo! Repped OP

They took months to patch the KRACK WPA2 vulnerability. I gave up on them.
This is not including the many other security exploits they've had in the past.

When I installed my netgear, it updated the driver right away. Although I'm not worried much about people tapping into my internet.

Would I be able to replace my optimum modem with this modem? Is it like a plug and play kind of thing ?

i have the modem and it is been running without reboots for 3 months. Modem itself costs 40-50 bucks. Modem runs really hot, I removed the cover and temperatures went down dramatically.

If you only need one or the other they are both individually on sale along with a $10 off coupon.

Router: $79.99 (before tax)
Modem: $48.88 (before tax)

Obviously, you could buy the bundle and sell what you don't need and make it a better deal but figured I would share regardless.

This vs the X4 (AC2350)? I know it has MU-MIMO, but other than that can anybody comment on whether the AC1750 is better in anyway?
