It is a pain to get it to work - but there is a work around.
First, you have to cancel your family plan and switch back to the free plan. If you're paying month to month, it will tell you that your family plan will expire on whatever date your normal monthly renewal is. You'll still be on your original family plan until it expires.
Second, apply your gift cards. It will switch you to the Spotify individual paid plan for 12 months valued at however much a 12 month plan costs (~$120). The gift card won't start until your existing family plan expires.
Third, and you may need to wait until the original family plan expires and you switch to an individual plan, switch back to a family plan. It will convert your 12 months at ~$120 to the Family plan with an expiration for however long you get for $120 of the Family plan at $14.99/month (8 months).
Here is the bad thing - when the original family plan expires, it will kick everyone out of your family plan and back to the free tier. You will need to manually add everyone back to your family plan and they will need to re-verify their information. This is easy if you are truly using the family plan as intended (only people living in your household).
So you're still taking advantage of a discount, you're paying $98.99 for 8 months of the family plan instead of ~$120 or a similar $20 discount.
I bought a $60 spotify gift card for $47.40 from Amazon on Prime Day and was really annoyed when I found out it wouldn't work directly for the Family Plan (says so on the card itself) - but was able to get it to work using the above procedure. My plan now shows an expiration of 11/27/18.
I was expecting $60 in credits, of which $12.99 would be subtracted for each month of the combined Spotify + Hulu plan. Here's the exact gift card: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/spot...Id=61400
Tell me that imagery isn't misleading at all. You can't even apply the credit to a Family Subscription either, it literally redeems for a 6 month subscription of Spotify Premium...
D1cks.
Don't see these often afaik so TU, but I cancelled my account to do the $0.99 three month trial and Pandora will have a free year with T-Mobile Tuesdays so lots of savings to be had before committing to a year of this.

A year or two would make more sense. But whatever floats your boat. I suppose try to buy 5 of them and see if it lets you. Not sure why it wouldn't.
I am not sure if you can extend codes that long though. Only one way to find out
