Some Costcos have the Precision Sensor ProFinder 6000+ Professional Stud Finder for $24.99, I couldn't find it online so in-store only and since not all Costcos carry the same things, YMMV. For information only, here's the Amazon page: https://www.amazon.com/Precision-...B07564RSHR

In some regions Menards has the very similar Franklin Sensors ProFinder 5000+ Professional Stud Finder on sale for $24.99 -->>$29.99 with an 11% rebate bringing the effective price down to $22.24 Note that they have expensive S&P fees and that the rebate is good in-store only, so B&M for this one as well. https://www.menards.com/main/tool...676953.htm

The one you got was likely the older ProFinder 5000+ model which I also bought one from my local Costco last year. Used it to mount customized window treatments and I was totally impressed with its ability to locate the studs. Highly recommended! Wave
I have the 6000+, not the 5000+. This model has been around for over a year now. They had cleared them out of my Costco (probably to make room for something else) and then brought them back recently. It's still a great deal at this price.

Funny, I was just looking at these at Costco last week. The price compared well against Amazon price, however, reading the usual litany of mixed Amazon user reviews, I decided to pass at that moment.

Tired of stud finders in general. Most of the ones I've tried seem to be very inconsistent. And the user reviews weren't overwhelmingly positive enough on this one to overcome my general weariness about stud finders.

My Costco had these on clearance a while ago...they're all gone now. If you call a store, they can look up if they have any of if any neighboring stores do.

4.2 stars is actually not that bad, and I'd guess that when so many have positive experiences while a non-insignificant percentage have bad results with a product that it comes down to either user error or a quality control issue. I, and many others in this thread, have nothing to say but good things about these stud finders, but if you're still on the fence I'd suggest buying it from Costco where the return policy is second to none. If you get a dud or it fails to meet your expectations, just return it.

Electrical should be center of the stud and drywall is at a minimum of 1/2" thick plus skim coat and paint so 1.75" screws "should" be required to hit a wire. Contractor should use nail plates to protect against that also. Unfortunately sometimes wire is fished with drywall in place and plates are not there and the wire is shallow. Not much you can do about that. your comment that you afe unlikely to hit something is definitely correct though!
Fyi electrical is rarely in the exact center of the stud. The code im my area but i believe the whole US is that if the wire is 1¼ or closer to the edge of the stud it needs a nail plate (a steel plate to protect the wire from nails)

So typically a 1¾ screw anywhere should be fine. Longer and you have a very very small chance of hitting a wire with your screw

I picked up one of these in Columbus today before I saw this thread. I don't remember the listed price (thought it was $29.99) but I remember there was $5 instant savings. Looking at my receipt at home the cost was $19.99 - $5.00. It seems to work great.
