On a side note I was having serious trouble with line noise and I tried one of these for $20 and it is amazing what it does

Not cheap but if you want real protection, there you go. Plug a freebie strip into that and you can feel safer.
Wish there was a $10 clone of that but the irony is I probably wouldn't trust it unless someone reviewed and tested it carefully.
yes I agree, I only use the Harbor Freight strips for things like lamps, fans, etc
here is what I wrote:
"i apologize if this has been addressed in previous pages...
has anyone noticed that the squared off 4-outlet freebie power strip is advertised as having surge protection but the smaller rounded off version does not? obviously i would trust neither with sensitive electronic equipment (i have all of my equipment stuff plugged into APCs etc), i just wanted to see if people noticed this as well? "
On a serious note, take a second to clean the dryer vent and any loose lint inside. When I worked on mine, I found lint inside, on the hot box,.. charred.
Yeah the metal housing that goes from the removalbe lint trap to the exhaust motor was full of lint and and other crap so I believe this is what caused the over heating issue that popped that thermostat. So I cleaned that and any other lint plus the exhaust vent. It did smell like burning when i first fired it up but i have been told thats normal since anything you loosened up is now going to hit the element. but i ran it for 20 minutes. and watched it and now when i turn it on i don't smell anything.

i wonder is there a way to test a surge protector. (without destroying it)

Most "surge" supressors are MOV devices connected across the AC lines.
They don't conduct electricity until they reach a higher "threshold" voltage, then they start conducting and absorbing the electrical spike, so your connected appliance is not exposed to it. That's the simple explanation.
When it gets a spike, it absorbs the energy. That ends up as heat. The common failure mode is that a series of very frequent spikes overheats the device and causes it to fail. If it fails short, that is usually catastrophic, with smoke and smell.
If it fails open, then it is "not there anymore" and you've lost your protective ability. Expensive units can monitor this. With a cheapo, you just don't know that you now basically have just a series of plugs with no protection.
Hope this helps.

How many places are you going to tile?
Use the one you were given, if it craps out rent one. Otherwise rent one.
Welder and toolboxes aside as they are excluded from the 20%s.
I was thinking of buying one, but don't really need one urgently. I thought I remembered an 89.95 sale last year.
I have a little sidewalk and steps toro snowblower that was my Dad's, powered by a 2 cycle Tec. engine that never ran worth a cr_p, and I think I could squeeze this guy in there with some custom mounting bracketry.
I must be getting old and lazy (getting?), but I sort of have a bug now because I repowered an ancient Ariens with the 6.5HP Predator engine, and was super happy with its performance and ability to start quickly even in 0deg F weather. I used regular 20W oil in it for the break-in.
So I can wait for this little guy, if another ten bucks might be possible.
Thanks,
John

And the blue freebie lights I have already experimented with. I have two really nice outdoor applications of their guts that I will work on outside when (and if, it looks like right now) the weather ever warms up. I'll post a pix of them when they're done. The blue lights are the best!
