Never trust the surge protection on a cheap no-name strip. Never ever. It will bite you.

On a side note I was having serious trouble with line noise and I tried one of these for $20 and it is amazing what it does

http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-...B00006B81D

Not cheap but if you want real protection, there you go. Plug a freebie strip into that and you can feel safer.

Wish there was a $10 clone of that but the irony is I probably wouldn't trust it unless someone reviewed and tested it carefully.
lol dude, why would you selectively quote me and then say the same thing I said?
yes I agree, I only use the Harbor Freight strips for things like lamps, fans, etc

here is what I wrote:

"i apologize if this has been addressed in previous pages...

has anyone noticed that the squared off 4-outlet freebie power strip is advertised as having surge protection but the smaller rounded off version does not? obviously i would trust neither with sensitive electronic equipment (i have all of my equipment stuff plugged into APCs etc), i just wanted to see if people noticed this as well? Very cool! I love those free fixes. I wish I had taken a picture of the thingy I made to get the spring off the boot for a front loading washing machine.. LMAO I ended up with 3 of the 1" clamps helping to force the pliers open because that spring is so strong.

On a serious note, take a second to clean the dryer vent and any loose lint inside. When I worked on mine, I found lint inside, on the hot box,.. charred. EEK!

Yeah the metal housing that goes from the removalbe lint trap to the exhaust motor was full of lint and and other crap so I believe this is what caused the over heating issue that popped that thermostat. So I cleaned that and any other lint plus the exhaust vent. It did smell like burning when i first fired it up but i have been told thats normal since anything you loosened up is now going to hit the element. but i ran it for 20 minutes. and watched it and now when i turn it on i don't smell anything.

I keep finding myself asking is this item for sale really a good deal? For example this weeks 11 drawer tool chest. Is the sales coupon better than buying it with a 20 or 25% off. Has anyone ever made an excel shit with a list of the normal price, 20%, 25%, sale, and clearance prices?

Well yes and no. Generally the sale price+ 20% coupon is a better deal than just the item coupon. That being said, tool storage and a few other categories are exempt from the 20% coupon so if it's something you want, look for the coupon for that item.

Hey guys, hows the wet tile saw at HF? I was given one as a loaner from a friend, and from what I can see the reviews are really horrible. Should I try using it or should I just get a cheap one from Lowes or Home Depot?

If you do a small job and don't want to pay a lot those at HF maybe good, but you want to last for some time you should get "Target" brand, Home Depot i think they do have MK they okay, but really heavy and the table gets rusty and after a while it will be hard to push the tile into the blade to cut, Had target for 10 years (paid $1300 at that time) witch 7 years the saw worked full time , every day and only changed the power switch 2,3 times as they go out from to much use. I heard Dewalt Saw is good too, but i think they are around $1500.

You can't really at home without some knowledge and equipment.
Most "surge" supressors are MOV devices connected across the AC lines.
They don't conduct electricity until they reach a higher "threshold" voltage, then they start conducting and absorbing the electrical spike, so your connected appliance is not exposed to it. That's the simple explanation.

When it gets a spike, it absorbs the energy. That ends up as heat. The common failure mode is that a series of very frequent spikes overheats the device and causes it to fail. If it fails short, that is usually catastrophic, with smoke and smell.

If it fails open, then it is "not there anymore" and you've lost your protective ability. Expensive units can monitor this. With a cheapo, you just don't know that you now basically have just a series of plugs with no protection.

Hope this helps.

I would never own a tile saw.

How many places are you going to tile?

Use the one you were given, if it craps out rent one. Otherwise rent one.

25% plus sale nearly always beat the sale coupon including ITC. So much so, I stopped looking at coupons. Haven't looked at 20%.

Welder and toolboxes aside as they are excluded from the 20%s.

Does anyone remember a lower price being offered for the 3HP little gas engine (69733) than $99.95?
I was thinking of buying one, but don't really need one urgently. I thought I remembered an 89.95 sale last year.
I have a little sidewalk and steps toro snowblower that was my Dad's, powered by a 2 cycle Tec. engine that never ran worth a cr_p, and I think I could squeeze this guy in there with some custom mounting bracketry.
I must be getting old and lazy (getting?), but I sort of have a bug now because I repowered an ancient Ariens with the 6.5HP Predator engine, and was super happy with its performance and ability to start quickly even in 0deg F weather. I used regular 20W oil in it for the break-in.

So I can wait for this little guy, if another ten bucks might be possible.

Thanks,
John

Anyone have any special things that they have done with all the freebie stuff? I've seen some people make different LED light things with the blue work light. Can we make like a home made rail gun with the magnetic bars somehow? lol Idk...

You've almost read my mind. I do have a motor application that I am working on for the magnetic strips.

And the blue freebie lights I have already experimented with. I have two really nice outdoor applications of their guts that I will work on outside when (and if, it looks like right now) the weather ever warms up. I'll post a pix of them when they're done. The blue lights are the best!
