Despite the original list price, and discount, I think the Nishiki is a far better bike and better deal. Some of it depends on preference like the 3x or 1x drivetrain, or 27.5" or 29" wheel size. However I think most people will agree the spec sheet favors thee Nishiki. I really wish I was in a better spot to jump on this right now. No toys for myself until after Christmas.

First time that I've seen the Nishiki on sale ever. I was hoping to buy one before I spent $1000 on a Bulls mountain bike from a different deal.

It's had an odd history, used to go for cheap regularly ($300ish IIRC). Then they pulled it for a while and now have rereleased. Pretty decent at this price point IMHO, if I needed a 27.5+ I'd be in.

You mean 29.

And I might add that these are too expensive for very entry level components.

Since when did an Avalanche end up with an Alivio Rear Derailleur? These were XT bikes back in the day.

Kinda lame to see the suntour fork as well. My first bike was an avalanche with xt and a rockshox fork, so this maybe they're cutting costs over the years?

That Colorado is using a no name/cheap Chinese crank called Samox, entry level mechanical Tektro disc brakes, no name hubs, no name wheelset. Are they even double wall?
Why 1x11 when most of us that ride here in N. Cal/Tahoe/Moab/Auburn only use 3-4 gears and this is in the nasty stuff? The hype for high gear counts are a waste and lots to do about marketing where more is better..nope.

I was in Mike's Bike's (chain bike shop) and they are further dropping prices on their Specialized 2019 for Black Friday week. Even on sale now, the components are a big step up from Dicks (and their notoriously poor bike department).

Sample: this one will get down to $600.+ : https://mikesbikes.com/collection...rh-comp-29

Another with much better components, but $150. more and worth it: https://www.rei.com/product/14579...-bike-2019

Another (Cannondale) at $573.: https://www.rei.com/product/14579...-bike-2019

And this one at $673. kills the Dicks bike: https://www.rei.com/product/10633...rt-12-bike

With REI, you get the points back to purchase swag like a helmet, tubes, shorts, etc. and you will have free tunes for a year from a shop that knows what they are doing.

If $500 is someone's max to spend on a mt bike, save up another $100-$200 and get something with much better components and value.

So, you can't do it. That's what I thought.
All of those bikes cost significantly more money and still equipped with "entry level" Altus or Acera shifters and rear derailleurs.

The Niki has no name hubs, entry level mechanical disc brakes, no name wheelset, no name entry level crank, and even the NX drivetrain is still SRAMS entry level offering. It's a very entry level mt bike by any measure. If you are on a tight budget, have at it, but it's really much too entry level for any mid level riding. For those that can't spend another $150., hey enjoy. Btw, the rear der is small potatoes and replaceable with Deore, SRAM 5, 7 for $25-$35. when or if the der ever needs replacing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't NX a step above X-9 in the hierarchy, and closer to Shimano Deore? That's more midrange.

Look, every SD thread can be debated that "if you just spend more you can get something better". But for fun lets pick through your comps...

Rockhopper Comp is currently priced at $729 and only available in greater bay area.

Cannondale Trail 6 is $205 more, not $150. Still has some entry level components.Good deal though.

Cannondale Trail 7 - Doesnt look like fork even has a lockout. EZFire shifters/Altus Derailluer (entry level).

Co-op Dirt 1.2 - $220 more. Only available in Small. No name Co-op branded wheel set (same argument you made with the Nishiki)

The Nishiki Colorado was $300 at Dick's about a year ago, THAT was a good deal.

Wow Nishiki. There's a name from my (1970s and 1980s) childhood. I gather now owned by Dicks.

Now we need a deal on Lotus bicycles...
