this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

If you care about dual channel on this laptop you're in the wrong price bracket.

The gaming you can do on a Ryzen 5 3500U is pretty limited regardless. I bought one (huawei matebook D) for my brother. Although yes you can do some. It will barely run Destiny at 30 FPS for example, settings as low as possible. You aren't really going to get current 3D gaming out of it. Maybe stuff like Rocket League. Not stuff like Assassin's Creed. And you could probably do most of that on single channel too. That's my point. The band of gaming that dual vs single Ryzen matters to is pretty narrow, kind of stupid to worry about it. It's not much for gaming WITH dual channel.

And again, cant you add a stick of ram and make it dual channel if it's so important? I honestly dont know but I'm guessing. Granted that adds some to the cost.

If you want better, spend more! This a great out the door deal for 300.

And again, isn't this "thin n light" ethos? why would you try to make a thin and light device into a gaming device in the first place? Thermals and heat anyone?

Do you work for lenovo or something?
The Motile is a kickass laptop for a huge number of people, it's no doubt great. I'd get it too. BUT where this all stemmed from was the people who were on the fence about the recent Leveno 330s and this Motile. I was making a point to show people who wanted to light game that the Leveno would be the better option. Just trying to help people in their decision.

The leveno is linked here $309

Anyone else with this laptop switch out the ram for something speedier and able to get passed 1800MHz? Just tried with my ram rated at 3200 and nothing. I think I might be missing a setting or something. Switched to 16 GB for the first upgrade.

Next is the wifi card upgrade if I can find one that fits from my bin of trash cheap laptops.

editing this post now: memory clocks went back down to 1200 MHz and I dont even know why, before I got any further I'm just going to let windows finish installing every update until it's current

Someone a few pages back mentioned that the laptop had poor WiFi range/connectivity. Did you have the same issue?

The Motile (both models) is single RAM slot only. Buyers have confirmed it already, and this review [notebookcheck.net] has confirmed it:

There is no soldered RAM and only one SODIMM slot is available. Thus, the Motile is limited to single-channel RAM only.
It's still a good price for the specs, and good specs for 1080p 30 fps low, maybe low-medium settings (medium with some custom tweaking) for big 2018-2019 titles.

I also just noticed that notebookcheck.net [notebookcheck.net] includes this specific laptop Motile Ryzen 5 in its synthetic benchmark lists, alongside a few dual-channel laptops. The benches aren't that much lower (vega 8 dual channel benches show 10-30% improvement over the Motile, and actual FPS differences are usually lower then synthetic benchmark differences). That could still mean a difference between smoothish ~30fps and choppy ~30fps or a few lowered graphics settings, but the closest vega 8 dual channel laptop is at least $100 more.

Ubuntu works for me. Other Linuxen probably have driver problems; I hope these get ironed out in time.

... in all seriousness, though, what are we comparing with? It's cheap and snappy compared to my mid-2014 MBP, but still pretty well built.
I'm very new to Linux but have some experience with headless Ubuntu in a server environment. What version of Ubuntu would you recommend installing on this laptop?

By default I'd choose 18.04.3 LTS but wondering if maybe I should go with 19.10 for possibly better compatibility

Lets not kid ourselves. $300 for a 1080p IPS display 2.5lbs laptop is already good. One that can play something like Rocket league or something not tough at medium 1080p is a steal!

Does your laptop have a Ryzen CPU and a Vega 8 integrated gpu? Ryzen architecture prefers and utilizes dual channel better. The vega 8 gpu also benifits from dual channel as it can make better use of the higher bandwidth. Here's some YouTube links.

Thank you for sharing! Any idea why the FPS difference is so much greater in the first video compared to the second? I wanted to use this for some light (mostly retro) gaming but am wondering how much I should temper my expectations

The only way to test this is speedtest and youtube on my end as I just updated my whole wifi setup 2 days ago and have great coverage in my home now. While I usually get 120download/20upload on most of my other devices, this laptop is getting less than half of that. Still great for basic content watching but did have some random buffering when selecting random 4k videos to watch on youtube. The wifi card on this has to go as it doesnt support mu-mimo.

You can get the bundle from a previous slickdeals post for only $313 so almost $90 cheaper than the previous frontpage deal. The link to the slickdeals post is here: https://slickdeals.net/f/13504120-motile-14-performance-laptop-ryzen-5-with-radeon-vega-8-graphics-t...
That link on the post isn't working ...have another?

Edit: nvm, just doesn't work with the Walmart app. Works with safari.

Bundle Link [walmart.com]
It still works for me. Maybe try it in an incognito window?

Edit: The link works but it seems the bundle is now $339 instead of $313

It comes out to 339 for me....not seeing a way to make it 319...
Anyone have any comparisons between this and the Lenovo 330s @ $309 also at Walmart? I'm torn between the two (need it for browsing, a sibling who's learning to code, Netflix/Hulu, and eBay). You guys all seem like experts compared to me so any opinions would be welcome. I'm leaning towards the Lenovo simply because of the better known brand name and slightly larger screen.....but I'm clueless as to the performance specs comparison.

I bought this. It's backlit. It's light AF. It's metal bodied. But it says Motile. I hate that it says Motile. Considering wrapping it. I don't need people to know the status of my digestive tract.

I fart.

No prob, the main difference is the second video has a better CPU and GPU so frames will be better in general but the video was used as a second example of how Ryzen CPU's benefit from the Dual channel ram and the huge benefits from playing in 720p. ***The first video would be more accurate to what you'd expect to see on this laptop.*** I posted the second vid just as more data so you could see some comparisons between performance on 1080p and 720p, (because the First video was only 1080p.)

Get the Motile, it will be much better for what your needs are.
