Trump Has Sabotaged America's Coronavirus Response [foreignpolicy.com]

Quote :
As it improvises its way through a public health crisis, the United States has never been less prepared for a pandemic.

The epidemic control efforts unfolding today in China—including placing some 100 million citizens on lockdown, shutting down a national holiday, building enormous quarantine hospitals in days' time, and ramping up 24-hour manufacturing of medical equipment—are indeed gargantuan. It's impossible to watch them without wondering, "What would we do? How would my government respond if this virus spread across my country?"

For the United States, the answers are especially worrying because the government has intentionally rendered itself incapable. In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government's entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. In numerous phone calls and emails with key agencies across the U.S. government, the only consistent response I encountered was distressed confusion. If the United States still has a clear chain of command for pandemic response, the White House urgently needs to clarify what it is —not just for the public but for the government itself, which largely finds itself in the dark.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China.

To bring order and harmony to the chaos, rein in the agency egos, and create a coherent multiagency response overseas and on the homefront, Obama anointed a former vice presidential staffer, Ronald Klain, as a sort of "epidemic czar" inside the White House

Trump isn't worried about the coronavirus because in his great mind he thinks it will miraculously disappear in April when the weather warms. What a moron!

Yeah, what a moron!

But he says COVID-19 seems more akin to the seasonal cold. And up to a third of common colds are caused by coronaviruses.

"It's not unreasonable to make the assumption" that cases will die down come spring, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told NPR. "We hope when the weather gets warmer it will diminish a bit," he says.

^No evidence to refute the fact that Trump fired the government's entire pandemic response chain of command and did not replace it, thereby gutting the Federal government's response machine per the reporting.

You shouting "fake news" does not make the news fake. vomit

#VulgarDonald "Trump is a pathological liar." "Trump is a phony." "He doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. He lies practically every word that comes out of this mouth."

Then: "The pattern we've seen under President Obama, disregarding the law, is really one of the most troubling aspects of this presidency, When he disagrees with the law…he simply refuses to comply with it."
Now: "Today, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny, Today, for the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith. This is wrong. This is not America. I stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally. I stand with every American that the Obama Administration is trying to force to chose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court decision."

"What we just saw today was an absolute demonstration that, not only what he (McConnell) told every Republican senator, but what he told the press over and over and over again was a simple LIE."

Then: "This bill (Hurricane Sandy relief) is symptomatic of a larger problem in Washington—an addiction to spending money we do not have. The United States Senate should not be in the business of exploiting victims of natural disasters to fund pork projects that further expand our debt."
Now: "Today, Texans are hurting. ... Democrats and Republicans in the congressional delegation will stand as one in support of the federal government meeting its statutory obligations to provide the relief to help the Texans who are hurting."

"In the 13 months I've been in the Senate, it has become apparent to me the single thing that Republicans hate and fear the most - and that is when they're forced to tell the truth. It makes their heads explode. An awful lot of the Republicans wanted exactly what Barack Obama wanted, exactly what Nancy Pelosi wanted, exactly what Harry Reid wanted, which is to raise the debt ceiling, but they wanted to be able to tell what they view as their foolish, gullible constituents back home they didn't do it."

"Look – look, of course we should have a surgeon general in place. And we don't have one because President Obama, instead of nominating a health professional, he nominated someone (Dr. Murthy MD & Harvard Medical School Professor) who is an anti-gun activist."

"What I tell people is I wear this (indictment for abuse of power) as a badge of honor"

"His (Robert's) decision yesterday and his decision a couple of years ago violated his oath of office,"

"Today's Democratic Party has decided there is no room for Christians. There is a liberal fascism that is going after Christian believers."

Are you claiming that quarantine is not a legitimate and necessary response to prevent a pandemic of a deadly virus?

I'm sure you "hope" that "diminishing" a deadly virus "a bit" will completely solve the problem before too many more people die or get stranded on a ship for over 2 weeks.

OMG, he's in bed with China. It all makes sense. The Russia thing was just a hoax to get people comfortable with an actual Soviet agent (Bernie), and now the truth comes out on Trump that he's a Chinese plant.

What is YOUR alternative Dr. Spek? Suffer huge population losses like 1918 flu? [google.com]

It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world's population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.

It can be joked about for now I guess, but it doesn't seem like this is going all that well.

I saw a stat that during the months of the SARS outbreak in 2003 the stock market lost over 12% in value. Yesterday the market gave back 3.5% on the virus hitting Italy and Korea. The world's supply chains are being disrupted by this outbreak and some factories are idle as a result. This is impacting business in a way more intense than people realize. Its 2-3 week incubation period is also disguising the nature of the threat, coupled with the fact that some people show no symptoms at all. Suddenly 200 cases in Italy and the world is in panic.

The point of the Obama czar position was to give someone the ability to make quick decisions in the event of a pandemic. It was created in response to the ebola outbreak, IIRC. The people who spend their time preparing for such events tend to become experts in pandemic response by studying what worked and what didn't work in the past and making provisions to operate agency apparatuses in a manner that is effective and timely. Outbreaks require that best practices be understood and standardized, and that a coherent response policy is available to be carried out quickly. Trump's impulse to undo everything Obama did and so he had to undo this too, despite the fact that it is sorely needed.

That whole, 'government bad' mentality and ideology does not tend to set us up to be prepared for emergency situations. Yet in a globalized world where pandemics are furthered by constant travel and trade, it's clear we do need preparation for such events.
Oops.
