Insta-popularity bump is frequent sign of suspicious voting.
Take this deal and purported popularity with skepticism

might still be a good buy for some, but buyer beware

search forums for RotoLight and you'll see it's almost exclusively posted by staffers.

Here's what I find funny about comments like this, you either need the product or you don't and you either determine it to be a fair price or not. Who cares who posts what? I don't hang out on SD to mindlessly spend money. If I see something I want or need that's a good deal I buy it. If I have no clue what it is or don't need it or it's not a good deal I don't...simple. If this is not a good deal or a crap product then say so. Oh and this Iconian dude is well known and posts constantly.

I think the problem is the entire point of the site is to get good deals so if a deal isn't a good deal or it is just an average price.... Why would people be up voting it? Obviously the site suffers from a ton of shill posts which has only gotten worse over time. It is funny how when things are pointed out, there is always someone who wants to cover it up though. Like yes, if people need it, sure but why even bother coming to this site over any other forum that posts deals if it isn't a good deal. I don't even come here for PC deals since most of the PC "deals" on here are pretty trash or late to the party lol

Agree with Sarcas. The fast popularity is suspicious. As to the product itself, it has some appeal (easy color temp adjustment of flash) but otherwise I would go for a regular video light from a more established maker like Aputure and a separate flash from Godox with some gels.

Rotolight Neo II price: $160, CRI: 96 (R9:91 R12:83 R15:98) TLCI: 91, 1414 lux @ 1m.
Aputure Al-F7 price: $98, CRI: 98 (R9:99 R12:80 R15:96) TLCI: 95+, 1500lux @ 1m.

The Aputure has generally better color quality and is slightly brighter although this may be due to its narrower beam angle of 45 degrees versus 50 on the Rotolight. However, power draw is a generally good proxy for overall light output and the Aputure is 15W versus 12W on the Rotolight.

Rotolight Neo II: guide number: 11.9m @ 39mm coverage @ ISO 100**
Godox TT600: $60, guide number: 34m @ 35mm coverage @ ISO 100

Like just about every LED flash, it is pretty weak. Much weaker than the TT600. The Rotolight does have HSS but you need a separate transmitter and HSS on a weak flash is near useless.

* Rotolight specifies 2000 lux @ 1m but with a separate power supply and states it is one stop lower on battery power so I divided by square root of two to get the new lux figure. For studio type situations, the 2000 lux would be an advantage but there are definitely far more powerful lights like the Godox SL-60 (60W) for cheaper for that purpose.

** Rotolight specifies a guide number of 16.8 @ ISO 200. This becomes 11.9 @ ISO 100 (dividing by the square root of 2). The Rotolight even has a slight advantage of a narrower beam angle. The TT600 when zoomed in has a guide number of 60m @ 200mm coverage @ ISO 100.

This is a great deal for the Rotolight Neo 2 if you have been waiting to buy this for the right price. (This is around the price of the original Rotolight Neo on sale.). I have owned both the Neo and the Neo 2. The 2 (vs the original) is definitely better in terms of brightness, battery life and the ability to use it as a triggered strobe. But for the money, you can find less expensive led / continuous lights. Both the original and 2 allow for color temperature from 3150 to 6300k and dimmable in 1% increments from 1-100% (unlike some lights that are only 2 color temps and H/M/L brightness levels). Also powered by 6 AA batteries vs proprietary ones so makes it relative cheap/easy to use 2 sets of rechargeable AA and quickly swap out as needed. One other thing that I do like about it is it produces round catch lights in portraits vs square / rectangular looking ones with other led lights. (Although this is probably an individual preference thing). If you've been eyeing to get one of these and know why you want it then this is a great price.

Comparing the specs of a LED / continuous light (Rotolight Neo 2) to a strobe / flash (Godox TT600) is like comparing apples and oranges. They both can be squeezed for a good tasting fruit juice but sometimes very different use cases. Okay.. maybe not the best analogy =P

That said, your use case (and wallet) will drive which one is better in most cases. A flash will always be brighter than a continuous LED if you are looking for a bright light for photography. But if you need a light for video work, you can't use a flash. Additionally many photographers have come to appreciate the benefits of a continuous LED as you can immediately see in real-time how your light/shadows/exposure will be before you click the shutter.

Not saying one is better than the other per se - it really depends on the situation you are trying to optimize for. And as I noted in my other post, if you were already looking at the Neo 2 and waiting for a good sale price, this is a great deal for a new one.

That's why I said "I would go for a regular video light from a more established maker like Aputure and a separate flash from Godox with some gels" so you get a better quality continuous light, the Aputure Al-F7 and a better flash with the TT600 for about the same price. The Rotolight has the convenience of being a single unit (although there are other LED video/flash products around) and the adjustable color temperature for flash that the TT600 lacks (but gel packs are cheap and can offer even more versatility) but has numerous downsides that I think buyers who are interested or looking at this product for the first time should consider. A modeling light or continuous source are great and I use them myself but it is much more limited in practice with a weak unit like the Rotolight; although as we all know, everyone has different needs so that weakness might not be an issue.

I posted before your other post but yes, I agree with what you said that if you are already looking for a Neo 2, this deal is worthy of a look.

Happens all the time. You do know SD is owned by Goldman Sachs right?
