Save yourself future grief (and fried gadgets), only buy Type-C (C-to-C) cables with the USB SS logo wrapped in a battery icon. That's the PD logo, and ensures the cable is *certified* by USB IF for power up to (the spec limit of) 100W.

It amazes me any C-to-C cable is sold without being rated for 100W. Especially with no labeling on the cable. People are going to watch devices fry later.

Edit: Reverting wiki vandalism, some disagree with this but there already have been $1,500 Chromebook Pixels and other gear fried.

Everyone wants USB-C to replace all other existing cables/connectors, yet, I'm more confused than ever when it comes to a USB-C cable.

For any given USB-C to USB-C cable, one has to ask if it supports data transfer, and if so, what speeds. Or, is it for power only? If it does Power Delivery (PD), how many watts is it good for and specifically, what voltages/amps does it support? Does it do data AND power? Does it do video? Is it Thunderbolt? USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 Gen 2? Who knows. Now I have to label all my cables so I know what I am grabbing?

This cable is a perfect example of a cable I would NOT want to grab to connect an external drive to a Macbook Pro or Dell XPS laptop since it is only USB 2.0. Why 2.0? Is it that hard to implement (at a minimum) USB 3.0?
Q: Is this usb 3.1?
A: No, it is USB C to USB C 2.0.

seems like an OK price at best for a USB2 cable?
This is exactly how I feel every time I see a deal on these and have to figure out what the specs are. Obviously not a problem with this post, but just how confusing the new USB standard can be.

thx for pointing that out. so basically this is either a low speed data cable or charging cable. I guess the versions between the powerlines I, II, and III is only how durable they are, not the data speed.

Does 60w mean it can't handle more than 60w? So no good for my Macbook Pro that uses a 87w charger?

In short, yes it won't. But that 60W should really read 3 ampere. A wire's capacity is limited by current, not power. So a hypothetical 100 volt charger could in fact deliver 300W through this wire without issue. But USB PD right now is limited to 20V, so you can only get 60W.

Some of these cables have resistors in the ends. Not sure if this does or not. If it does, then yes, there would be a limit on the cable.

If USB-C thunderbolt cable is the highest data transfer cable and delivers power, does it also mean it's backwards compatible and safe to use for simple USB-C charging and can handle USB 2.0 etc? TIA

If I only want this for charging, is it sufficient then to maximize PD from a wall charger or power bank (or to charge the power bank itself) to my Samsung Galaxy S9?

Also, general question, USB-C to USB-C, like these ones, are always going to charge a device faster than a USB to USB-C, right?
