Before I got my Traeger, I used to smoke on a gas grill. I used the ikea smoker box and wood chips. The reason is because it was 100% the fruit wood. These Bear Mountain (and many other pellets) are a mix of hardwoods even if it just says a single flavor. Like for Hickory, it's a mix of Hickory and either Oak or Alder. They do this because (1) it's cheaper to produce and (2) the pellets provide both the smoke flavor and the heat in a pellet smoker. Since you heat with gas, I would not recommend these pellets for that. You'll get more smoke flavor from chips or 100% fruitwood pellets.

I use these regularly, but i'm not seeing a deal direct from the manufacturer.

For people with a local Tractor Supply, Shiptons Big R or even Ace Hardware, these are regularly on sale for $6 (or $7, i forget) per 20lb bag.

Yes, they are good pellets. Definitely recommend them.

How do these compare to Traeger and pitboss pellets? I've heard Traeger using oils and other artifical stuff in their pellets in the past, but not anymore? The average bag of 20 lb pellets is about 15-20, so thinking of grabbing 2 bags

No, it wont work to cook food. You could smoke cheese. A pellet smoker has a continual light and feed of the pellets to keep a high flame/heat.

I don't have a pellet smoker but is it possible to use this in regular smoker? Could I just toss these in a cast iron pan (sorry if that sounds asinine, I'm pretty new to smoking)

Pit Boss are great, auto feeds pellets from the hopper. I have the 820 Pro but its pricy. Here are couple lower cost barrel styles..
