My wife went to costco today and snagged a 7.0 Cu Ft top draw freezer for $159.99, certainly cheaper than what you can get from other stores. She snagged the last one in my local store, but might be available in other costco stores.

I didn't put the wheels on mine, I build a plant form to keep it off the ground. The wheels looked like a PIA so I didn't use them. The unit will not sit level without the wheels so either you use a shim or put the wheels on.
You are correct that the chest is not level without the casters so went ahead and lay it down on it's back to install the casters. I waited more than 24 hours before plugging it in today. Time will tell if the compressor/refrigerant is bustet but so far it is cooling fine.

How much does these normally go for before the $160 sale price?
I believe that this is normal price if you get it from costco, and it is certainly cheaper than other Bestbuy, and Sams Club for its size. As you can see from other commenters, freezers are in high demand because of covid.

It's a nice freezer, I tried on multiple occasions to get one locally with no luck. I called every day for 2 weeks, finally one day they had 3 in stock - instantly called my wife to go grab one (she works 5 mins from costco) and they were all gone by the time she got there.

I set up an alert using visualping (detects changes on websites and sends notifications) and was able to get one from the website, for about $100 more than this - which, I'd never normally pay that much above 'normal' price for... and now they're selling one with half the space for the same price! Pretty wild that these are still so hard to get ahold of, best of luck to anyone that needs one.

I picked up one two months ago at the same price. They had a palette then and it was gone within minutes. After I got it home I read the instructions and read the reviews. It was simple, If it was in any other position than upright, leave it in place and don't plug it in for 24 hours. I got it in my basement and although it was upright the entire time I didn't plug it in for 2 days. Has worked perfectly. According to my Kilowatt I should use about $2 a month.

Yes it is. But I had searched for MONTHS to find one (everyone was sold out) and when I saw it I grabbed it. Smilie

Manual defrost - which is better for energy efficiency. As far as space, it's just for my wife, dog and I - rough guesstimate is there's a good 4-5 months of food in there. Rule of thumb, about 30-40 lbs of meat per cubic foot. We have a variety of stuff in there, basically just 'extra' of everything we eat - veggies, meats, berries etc. I can't imagine needing more space, it would probably work well for a small family. 7 Cubic feet is a pretty good compromise between footprint, energy efficiency and capacity.

Yeah, I almost bought one about a year ago for $130. Should have jumped on it. May swing by mine tonight to see if they have it.

I purchased a different brand 7.0 cu ft chest freezer from a Home Depot deal back in 2012 listed on SD for exactly $153 shipped before tax, after a $76 discount ($229 'regular' price). Considering the circumstances, I think $160 in 2020 dollars is a very good deal even if you have to throw it around yourself.

Regarding durability, it has been moved from place to place a few times. A very small elevator necessitated moving it on a dolly completely perpendicular to the ground, so it has definitely survived tilting. I waited 24 hours after each move for the compressor to settle it's insides.

I misread the title and thought Tyler Perry made a movie called Madea's Top Drawer Freezes

The manual is a bit confusing. It said:

Important: If the freezer has been in a horizontal position for any period of time, wait 24 hours to allow the refrigerant to settle before plugging in the freezer.

and in the bullet points below it there is a note saying, Tilting the freezer more than 45 degrees could damage the compressor and the sealed system. Also when moving the freezer, DO NOT turn it upside down or on its side.

It is also tough to put the casters without tilting it or laying it in one of the sides.
The most important part of not plugging in yet for a prolonged 12-24 hrs is simple because you want to make sure the compressor is submerged with oil. During transport, the oil is being moved around. Running the compressor dry will shorten the life of the unit.
