making money by selling

191 51 October 14, 2020 at 01:18 PM
i am trying to sell items and make some money. i need some guidance if anyone out there is able to provide practical guidance on how to do this and make money.

It is so much work and I dont make more than a dollar each sale after shipping and fees.
include the time I am spending and the gas in my car etc, it is all wasted time.

How did you acquire product? every company or brand I reached out, already only deals with B&M or resellers with great online presence.

I started this as COVID has impacted me and my family completely and I do not think I am doing it right at all ... some suggedtions and encouragement would be awesome.

I am not an expert. It's hard to compete with Amazon and the like these days. Selling used to be a bit easier when ebay was in it's infancy but I imagine it's very difficult to turn a profit for most folks trying to buy/sell.

I would think your profit would depend on these things:

- What are you selling: This can affect your profit as different items will have different profit margins.

- How are you acquiring the products?

- Where are you selling? Fees and such can affect your cost.

- What is your income goal? Are your trying to make a living of it or just doing it as a hobby?

I used to buy/sell things when I was younger and still sell things when I want to get rid off thing every once in a while. It's a lot of work for not much money (ymmv) and there are easier ways to earn an income imo.

I hope your situation improves.

Thank you very much for your detailed response. It helps.

I was trying to see if i could make a living.

I reached out to many companies with products and all of them say the same thing - no special reseller discount as they are not looking for resellers.

One large scale laptop maker gave me a small business reseller account, and... wait for it, wait for it, gave that account 25% off, while they advertise upto 50% off on the website Big Grin (bang head on keyboard)

Can't ride in his X5 because it's loaded with plasma TVs.

I used to sell on Amazon. I typically followed the Ron Popeil slogan (set it and forget it) when I sold on there while laughing at all the other sellers trying to undercut each other in a race to the bottom where only the buyers win.

I sold most of my items (mostly sourced from Kmart or Sears clearance) for between 300-500% profit over cost. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Walmart has taken the place of those chains in the clearance realm now, so much so that a seller in my area (30-40 miles from me) seems to exclusively stock their eBay account from the clearance.

I wouldn't bother turning on my computer to make a dollar. You're not doing it right then. Find something you can make $100 on instead of selling 100 items you only make a dollar on.
