Reminder that RAM is not upgradable after purchase so you may want to purchase a model with 16GB memory if that is important to you
edu is cheaper
Underpowered? Seriously? Have you ever used an iPhone or iPad? Their speed is unparalleled in the mobile market. I expect entry-level MacBooks and Mac minis to compete very well with Intel's i7 10-series desktop processors. Intel has been sitting on its laurels for way too long.

Man... This review (and a few others) really has me rethinking NEEDING 16gb of RAM for these M1 Macbooks. I just have the conundrum of wanting to buy one, but am coming from a 2015 15" with 16GB.
Still, I think I am going to pull the trigger. Test it out in Logic Pro X, and if I run into issues, I will just return it (and consider ordering the 16GB variant).
I would be interested in hearing your results. The more user reviews, the better.

Yep, I'm in the same boat. I have a 2019 16" MacBook Pro i9, and this is making me want to switch. I just need screen real estate... which... isn't there on the 13s, sadly.

The new M1 is a revolutionary product and that isnt a hyperbole. I watched about 40 different videos, read over a dozen reviews. It is pretty universal.
These systems are fast and you got to remember, this is a 1st gen product. Apple's slowest chips on Apple's lowest end hardware. A $999 Mac Air is smoking my 2019 and 2017 MB 16 & 15 Pros in things that matter to me.

The experience is like an iPad. Canon r5 4k, 10-bit HDR 4k video scrubs 4-5 layers like butter. Renders a 10 minute clip in 4 minutes that take my $4k Macbook 16 which 45 watt CPU 16 minutes. That is amazing..

However, having said that. I am holding out due to lack of Docker/Kubernetes compatibility. But if my job wasnt docker. I would go all out.
The unified memory architecture means there is no bottleneck. You can open up 30 apps and they instantly load. The experience is like an iPad.

Same here, I really just need a new Mini to act as a casual daily machine, while I remote desktop into my PC to do other work. I might just run down to the store and grab the Mac Mini and try it out.

Well there you go. Anyone who doesn't think the high-end MacBook Pro/iMac/Mac Pros aren't going to make Intel's processors look puny by comparison is in for a rude awakening.
People are benchmarking real devices like going against Dells XPS and Lenovos P1s doing real things like encoding, scrubbing and rendering, exporting 4k videos. The $1000 mac airs can hang with $3k Windows machine. Nothing synthetic about compiling something like NodeJS in 1/5 the time it is done on a Linux box running on a THinkpad.

Well that pretty much seals it for me, 8GB it is. Thanks for sharing.
I was on the fence regarding memory and HD space. I ordered one last week with 16gb ram and 512gb HD adding $470 (with the extra core). After looking at the reviews and really considering what I plan to do with it (basically just everyday stuff with a bit of picture tweaking and home video manipulation, I changed my order to the basic one for $900 (wife is a teacher). After seeing multiple reviews I'm convinced that this machine handles RAM much better than my current Dell, I figured 8gb and 256 HD is plenty for me with iCloud and a NAS. Worst case, I'll pass this machine to my wife who is happy with her 2 year old Air and I'll opt for a new one in a year as Apple should have much better choices then. Besides I have until January to return to Apple if needed. We'll see.

How does the Costco warranty work for computers? They have their own service centers or reimburse expenses?
Costco doesn't offer warranty. It's underwritten by Visa. So it goes through the standard Visa process. You submit a claim, they ask you to get a repair estimate (ask Dell/Apple/HP to send you a repair quote), they reimburse the repair cost. If the cost is more than the laptop purchase cost, they will reimburse you fully instead.

It's the standard Visa warranty. Costo concierge before manufacturer's warranty ends is completely useless however. Before the Visa warranty, you deal with Apple directly for warranty. Visa/Costco will refuse to help you if Apple deems that the damage is not covered by warranty.

Have you gotten your machine or are you still waiting to receive it?

Don't. Windows/PC suits you and there's nothing wrong with that.
Why apple fan boys bark like someone put the foot on their tail.
Seriously! I am not a fan of Apple or I literally hate Windows systems, a very inefficient slow and crap product, still I use Windows/Linux and Apple products in my day in day out life. I have my own Linux Machine which I use on daily basis, having said that, Apple is nothing more than a glorified UNIX/Linus machine with nice expensive packaging.
I use Ubuntu with less than half these specs and it runs like a champ.
I am a fan of technology not brand, and I believe technology should be cheaper and companies should stop fooling people.

I'm not concerned about the 8gb handling the workload now, I am worried about it handling the workload 5 years down the road when the operating systems get more complex. I'm still on the fence.

Early reviews suggest yes.

I've been testing mine non-stop. On par with the 16 inch MBP. Crushes any Intel laptop lol

Unless you have seen the results, you can't say anything negative about Apple, especially now. M1 is a beast and this is just the beginning.

Who doesn't backup important data? The same rules apply for any phone/computer in case it gets stolen. We have to find new reasons to hate the Macbook Air, this is how sad it has become.
No, I swore off MacBooks forever when Apple integrated the SSD into the motherboard. With a phone, all your data is easily synced into the cloud (contacts, pictures, emails, apps). It's not the same with a computer. Yes, you can backup but it's nothing like a phone. Also, getting the data and applications back is a real chore if you don't clone. But, if the issue is not related to your data or operating system, why go through all the extra hoops when you don't have to? Having the storage drive separate from the planar alleviates that. Anyway, even if you have the best backup strategy and execute it perfectly, that still leaves your data in someone else's hands once your integrated SSD leaves you. If Apple or someone manages to bring that motherboard back you better hope they don't care about your data. Cause if they do then you are screwed. It's simply not a risk for some.

The 7th gen came out last year, has 18 hours of battery life. Oh, it also has HDMI, USB-A, weighs 2.4lbs, the best laptop keyboard on the planet and can run every Windows application going back 40 years. Meanwhile, this new Mac can only run 64-bit MacOS apps. But, again, it's geared towards the business elite, whereas this Macbook is for the Starbucks crowd.
Lmao at the idea that the business elite cares what ports they have
