Reminder that RAM is not upgradable after purchase so you may want to purchase a model with 16GB memory if that is important to you
edu is cheaper
Underpowered? Seriously? Have you ever used an iPhone or iPad? Their speed is unparalleled in the mobile market. I expect entry-level MacBooks and Mac minis to compete very well with Intel's i7 10-series desktop processors. Intel has been sitting on its laurels for way too long.

Can anyone recommend a purchase strategy for Apple's Black Friday special w $150 towards SECOND purchase? I want a Mac Mini or Air so I was thinking buy the track pad or keyboard?
My suggestion is buy from Edu store to save the $, rather than being essentially forced to spend more $ later.

Target gift cards get you $20 @ Target for every $100 at Apple you spend...

Is that a student only requirement? I'm not familiar w Edu. Yeah I dislike how they're forcing you to buy again in order to use the credit.

We have college students in my household so I was comfortable using it. If you aren't, then likely Costco and the other deals are better.

You simply must tick a tickbox that the education discounts / deals apply to you / you agree with Apple T&Cs on the Edu store. I had no issue doing so.

Yes...I know storage and memory aren't the same thing. I should've written storage AND memory.

This is now $1449, which is higher than Apple. For that same price you can get the 16GB ram. Do you think there is an issue with the Costco site where it should be 16GB ram? Is there something extra you get from Costco that would justify the price increase?

*** Edit... that is for the Pro, and not the Air.

Thx

Geekbench is not a reliable benchmark. Reviews have borne out that native ARM applications are performant, but x86 application performance is as expected: not competitive with high-end desktop processors.
In some aspects, they are competitive with high-end desktop processors. Maybe not the absolute top end like the 5950x, but there are a ton of $300-$400 100W+ desktop CPUs that are put to shame by these M1 machines.

Also, what's with moving the goalposts anyway? These are Apple's ENTRY-LEVEL machines. The only argument anti-Apple people have is that they're not as fast as $500 CPUs that eat up over 200W. I have an i9-9900k custom built machine and a server with a 3700X. I don't expect the M1 to beat those in raw computational power, but I've seen how much power the i9 eats up during benchmarks and how large of a cooler I had to buy to prevent it from throttling. If the M1 is anything to go by, then Apple's release of Apple Silicon Mac Pros and higher end machines will be very interesting. I'm betting a lot of anti-Apple people will get real quiet.

That's not what you initially claimed regarding i7 desktop CPUs, so it's immaterial to the argument.
