You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.
It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.
Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.
back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

The protection plan is a scam, yes you can remove it, call cricket and have them remove it and credit you back and give you some extra credit for all the wasted time.
Sadly have to use Rsim and wait 6 months for the true unlock.
Both of mine worked but after inserting many times the phone showed "no sim". To fix this I put the rsim in the tray and the sim I wanted to use on top. Then flipped it upside down and lightly pushed on each contact with my finger nail while holding the sim in from the other side.
I never had to go to settings. The menu just popped up.

traded in one of the 2 my sister had bought, went to Apple store, no ID was asked. just the phone. I was not buying, just trading in.
NO ID, no fingerprint, I even offered but nope, they needed nothing - at all
this surprised me

Thanks to Stef33, this is indeed illegal in majority of states, if not all. Companies cannot charge taxes on full maximum selling price but Cricket is doing it. I have raised a complaint with my state's sales tax department too. Let's see if anyone gets back with anything concrete.
anyway... thought I'd share
