I still buy the full sugar ones for the kids, but I cut the sugar by also buying a big bag of plain oats and mixing in some of the plain oats when I add the water. The kids don't mind at all.

The less sugar is sweetened with Monk Fruit, which is sweeter than regular sugar so less can be used. Probably a healthier sugar to eat than processed, but maybe the Monk Fruit sugar is still too sweet for you. Seems just right for my family. I have bought the regular packs before and used a sifter to get rid of some sugar while still having the larger size packets, although some of the flavoring and spices also gets filtered. If I filter a little through softer and not so vigorous then I find it's a nice balance and I can still retain the flavoring.
Not a bad Idea though like you say to just add some dry oats to the instant packet and mix in to increase volume and dilute sugar a bit.
