I have these, tested them out at ski mountain, when at the base and driving away I lost reception in half mile. When on the mountain they work fine. One negative is the charging port is stiff, and they come with chargers (or the 3 pack I bought did) so heads up

Agree, cellphone work much better. laugh out loud
I would think cell coverage isn't always available in areas where people hike.
Also I see people using these on cruise ships, where there's no cell coverage out at sea.

Baofengs are like $9-20 ea depending on the model. When you are done with them they are so cheap you can toss them in a lake like I do.

The UV-5R is the "Gold Standard" Chinese Communist Party grey-market radio. You can use the free CHIRP software to program it or manually tune what frequency you want.

The BF-888S or 777S or variant are similar but have no display. These are programmed for free via the CHIRP software (google it) and you'll obviously need the $9 programming cable. If you search eBay and Amazon for these they often come with a cable for free.

Here is a FOUR pack for $44. If you search and watch (CamelCamelCamel alert) you will find these individually for as low as $9 each. The Baofeng and Retevis names are interchangeable.

I would personally use the Made-In-USA C.H.I.R.P. software. A HAM-Radio NERD wrote the software. Its so simple to use. Install the software. With the radio turned OFF, you plug the USB programming cable into the computer and plug the other end into the radio. Turn the radio ON. Then within the CHIRP software you go to Radio---> DOWNLOAD FROM RADIO the radio's existing programming file. Then you make the modifications to the file (channel frequencies, etc. Google "FRS" and "GMRS" for a listing of LEGAL frequencies). Then you save the file; give it a name to remember and save it in a folder. Then "Upload To Radio" the file back onto the radio. YOU'RE DONE. Turn the radio off and plug in another radio and "Upload To Radio" the same file to them. Now -- if it won't let you clone the same identical model radio then the other radio may have a different base software firmware. All of you have to do is again download the newer radio's file via "Download From Radio" and then select File-->Import and find the file you saved earlier. Then Upload To Radio and so on....

That's why I came here, does anyone have good suggestions for radios for hiking, or even emergency go-bags?
Thank you for not using the term" bug out" bag.

Baofengs are legal. Oh, and nobody cares. Nobody, including the FCC, gives a rats a** about 2-watt radio transceivers that broadcast on the actual designate Family Radio Service (FRS) frequencies. All I know is that for $150 you can get TWENTY Baofeng UHF two-way radios.
You knew the ham radio mall cops were gonna bitch about the stupid license thing.

Hopefully you fish in that lake too. Get some nice mercury levels going so you can eat your pollution.

Nah the water temp is cool enough to keep the lithium cells from leaching for another 20 years. I'll be done fishing that lake by then. I live out in the woods so I burn my trash and return used motor oil back into Mother Earth where it came from.
