I know nothing about generators but am starting some research and appreciate any advice or feedback. Here is my approach, I would get the unit just for survival purposes. I would need it to, at least, alternate power to 1 fridge and 2 freezers to keep food from spoiling while keeping a few lights on, maybe a few hours of TV, and running the occasional microwave meal, coffee pot and the window AC in summer or an oil radiator heater in winter at night only. We have been in this house for 6 years and have lost power a 6-8 times during large storms with the longest being for 30 hours or so. But, we had one event where my neighbors went without power for 2.5 days.

So, right now it seems like this unit and the Wen 56380i generator $649.99 that is also on sale. Which should I get and why? I plan to just use gas. I know the Wen is lighter and quieter (plus pluses) but any other reasons to get the Wen? Also, other than a good extension cords, what accessories would I need? Thanks!

Thanks for posting my thoughts, literally on the same questions and experiences with power losses. I know this, I need to get a line to my panel direct plug this on and switch on what I need (transfer switch?)

I was able to borrow one of these for a day this week while our power was out (now back on after 7 days). It ran our furnace, fridge, garage freezer, and charged some devices with no problem. I would have bought one myself if they were in stock anywhere, even for the normal price of around $1000. My only complaint would be how loud it is. The handle also rattled pretty bad making it even louder. Make sure to put it on the side of your house with the neighbor you like the least. It is push button start which is nice, with a back up pull cord start. The friend I borrowed it from said the first time he tried starting with the pull cord it broke the cord and some of the nuts and bolts needed to be tightened up. Other than that it seemed like a great generator with juice to power the essentials.

Don't be like me, buy one before you need it. Don't wait until your power goes out because they will probably already be sold out.

Edit: forgot to add, I do not recommend using this or any other generator to power sensitive electronics like TV's or computers. Generators don't produce a clean steady power supply. There will be surges and fluctuations which can fry sensitive circuits. If you are looking to power sensitive electronics like that buy an Inverter generator.

How'd you hook it up to your furnace?

the best (and unless i'm mistaken only to code ways) 1) transfer switch 2) interlock with inlet 3)generlink transfer switch.

Can this run quieter than 72db? National parks set the noise level for a generator at 60. Is 72 the max noise level, and it runs quieter at lighter loads? Or is it always going to be at 72?
I have this genny. It's LOUD, idle or load, almost the same. I never put a dB meter to it but didn't really need to. You will not make friends if you brought this into the park... Smilie - good genny otherwise. I have no issue with my electronics, only thing it won't do is charge my UPS.

Thanks OP. I'm in Houston and just ordered this online Thursday for 799. Went to the store and snagged the last for 100 bucks less.

The Wen model you mention won't supply the wattage to run all you listed, so you need to go with the Firman since you list the Wen and this Firman unit to choose between. You need to add up all your wattage requirements focusing on starting watts

Same question. In Dallas and I'm sure none are available in store. If I go in does anyone know if they do a rain check?

Continuously no, but if you staggered things and ran each freezer for like 6 hours at a time,, only ran the ac at night without the lights and tv etc. I think it would work?

My furnace was hardwired so I opened the box and undid the wiring to the wall (Power, Neutral, Ground wires). Then used an extension cord with the end cut off and wires stripped and attached the P, N, G wires from the extension cord to the furnace. My furnace has a separate pump that pumps water out so I ran another extension cord to that. (That one just plugged in to a normal outlet). Yours may or may not have this.
Is this "up to code"? Absolutely not. Do I recommend you try this yourself with little knowledge? Not at all. But what it's freezing outside, you are about to run out of firewood and have a family to keep warm you gotta do what you gotta do.

Just bought one to use in the case of an emergency. All I would really need to power would be a furnace a refrigerator a deep freezer and a few lights. I have a natural gas line on my back deck. Would I just run extension cords to these appliances or somehow connect the generator to my house panel and manually select the breakers I need to use ?

I was in Rockwall today and they have the generators in stock located by the laptop area.
