You're better off with a leave-in wired probe for smoking imo. Bonus points if it can send bluetooth updates to your phone. Smoked pork you just take alllll the way up to 204F, and it's going to take long enough I doubt you'll want to babysit all the way through.

This is awesome for say tempering chocolate, but overkill for most home cooking when you can get 95% of the performance for 20% of the cost with a thermopop or other budget instant read.
Never overcook meat again. It will change your life culinarily. This is a good deal: the motion sleep, auto backlight, and autorotation make this a worthy upgrade over the thermopop and original thermapen
Got one of these just before Christmas.. we do a lot of steaks and this is worth every penny... able to get them just right every time.

I have a thermopop and their smoke thermometers. Both are great. But the company support is A+. You can talk to someone in the United States right away by calling.

The plastic that holds the battery in on my thermopop broke recently after five years. I called and they sent a new plastic piece for free without any hassle. Obviously out of warranty but they still helped out. You definitely get what you pay for with them.

I can't imagine spending almost $100 for a thermometer and it not being wireless and bluetooth like Meater or Yummly, personally

For anyone that loves to cook or grill, I would definitely recommend the MK4, especially at this price. They are extremely well made, quick, accurate, support high temps (for checking oil/candy), etc.

For those who are just casually into cooking, their Thermopop that usually goes for $30 is likely sufficient (and in my experience is still a step up from most other thermometers). Main difference is the need to turn them on and the longer time to get temp. I have given these to both my parents and in-laws and they love them.

O.K.

"Clear" to others is often helped by a smiley, especially for slow ones like me Smilie

I got one of these thermometers about 4 or 5 years ago for $60. It stopped working properly one day within about a year. I tried to get the battery cover off but it was welded on. So I cut up the back jamming it open. I changed the battery and the same results.

I will NEVER buy another POS thermapen.

I understand where you are coming from; I used to have that perspective as well until I finally pulled the trigger a few years ago. Keep in mind, instant thermometers like this are really a different product than leave in ones for smoking/roasting. The lack of BT/WiFi isn't a big deal; what matters is speed, accuracy, and durability and this nails all three. Once you try one, it's really hard to go back to other instant thermometers.

On a side note, I used to feel the same way about Harmony remotes ("who in their right mind spends $250+ on a remote...). That was until I set up a home theater got one (and especially after I got married and had luddite in-laws) . Now I can't imagine going back.

I kind of disagree with you here; I have a FireBoard for all my smokes and love it, but if my meat isn't wrapped, I'll probe it as it gets close. A leave in probe or two, only gives you one or two spots and sometimes the meat directly surrounding the probe doesn't heat at the same time.

This said, I also use this for all my grilling needs and a ton of inside cooking needs. For smokers, you really need a probe (as you say) but having this is super handy. All other needs, this is the mainstay.

Update: Sorry, just RE-read your post as I was through a little shade and want to clarify as I'm trying to disagree with nuance. It's about your budget and value. You can buy a cheaper thermometer that won't read as fast, accurately and you'll have to replace many times before this. If you can afford it, or you want to give someone a really nice gift, grab this.

Spent $60 on an Amazon knock off and still in return policy, think I might order this and return the Amazon one. Seems to consistently get picked as the best one out there.

Had the old Thermapen, it gave up its soul after 6-7 yrs. Bought MK4 at a reduced price off that I got in consideration of my original one going bad.
MK4 is a definite improvement over the old model in some seemingly minor improvements which make its use definitely more convenient. In addition, the MK4 uses AAA batteries, vs. button types with the old one.

For me the majority of use is in reheating leftovers. Just reheat it to the safe temp, no more overheating and drying it out. Of course, I do use it in initial cooking, too.
Just 6-7 years? I'd be ticked at paying that much for that longevity. For comparison I bought one of their cheaper instant read thermometers for about $25 (before they had thermopops) and I just now changed the battery after 7 years of use.

I had way too many of the cheap $10 units and I sure did think "they did the same thing". Not even close. Great for amateurs that don't know any better. Fortunately I have moved on from that status. Head in the sand can be a nice place for many though.
