Happy UDM Pro user here. Although EdgeRouter line is more flexible to configure via command line in EdgeOS, for average home user the UniFi line is so much easier. UDM Pro is good value if one plans to enable IDS/IPS and use Ubiquiti's surveillance product as well.
Bought this a couple weeks back during the last sale. This router is rock solid. Can handle PPPoE at gigabit speed with hardware offloading for those with fiber/GPON. My old Asus router running FreshTomato could simply not keep up. Now it's running in AP mode paired to this ER4. Also there's a huge support community for Ubiquiti and on Reddit.
The title does say usb router.

This is exactly why I had to switch from pfsense to the unifi USG router. (Went with the unifi controller interface for ease of use).

Centurylink gigabit fiber is great for $65/month with no price increases, but hardware offloading is a must with pppoe.

Nope, which is probably why it's capable of gigabit speeds. I have a USG 3, and I want to take it out back and give it the Office Space printer treatment. It's never good for more than 200MB/s.
My USG 3P works at 940 mbps up and 940 down, gigabit speed. You might want to check your config and perhaps turn off deep packet inspection if you have it enabled.

Didn't think of that. How about an ac infinity fan instead https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinit...usb&sr=8-4 [amazon.com]
Yup, that's essentially what I make, rubber feet, speed controller and all. I have so many 120mm fans lying around and old Zalman speed controllers. Use them on my amplifier/receiver/network rack/etc.

If you have the $, the UDM-PRO is their modern solution to this, adds IDS/IPS and a bunch of other features from the UniFi line.
UDM doesn't seem like a great investment now with more and more devices supporting 2.5Gb+ And ISPs pushing over 1Gb.
The value proposition does seem better if you're all in with their Protect and Access products, so I'm probably not the target customer for UDM…

I have some TP link EAP 245 V3 access points that support Omada but haven't hooked them up yet. Got them from Amazon few months ago. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NMZR...UTF8&psc=1

Should I upgrade to a TP link router to go with them or going with the Ubiquiti ER-4 you think?
I've not used the Ubiquiti ER. At this price, a pfsense router running on a mini PC or SOC would be more powerful. I personally run OpenWRT on a Linksys AC 3200 with the wifi disabled. Don't have any performance issues with it so haven't upgraded yet.

All depends what your goals are.
I personally have a large IoT presence(My network typically has 150+ concurrent devices), Camera presence (8x POE, 2x WIFI), etc, and gigabit internet.
I wanted IDS/IDP at gigabit speeds, and the ability to VLAN and Firewall devices within my network from each other.
If you're not into networking, just get a mesh device setup. Its fine.
If you're into networking, but no a hardcore networking guy, UniFi is excellent.
If you're a networking pro, get some used cisco gear and run pfsense or whatever, you won't be happy with UniFI.
I'm a software guy, and not a networking guy, so I run UniFi. Its not for everyone.
Since you run unifi

Is the USG usable for a decent multi-vlan network?

I read how it couldn't do static DHCP allocation in a decent way for a large number of devices without hacks and getting wiped at reprovision.
Rest of my network is Unifi. Would be good if I can pop in USG and forget it.

How many vlan's does it take to be "decent"?

I have 3 vlans with fewer than 30 devices and the intro level ubiquity stuff is fine. It seems like if you have enough money to substantially beat that, buying a more expensive router wouldn't be a big deal.

I did - and had opened numerous tickets with Ubiquiti support, as well as tried experimental firmwares, to no avail. At the point where I turned off DPI and wasn't getting marked improvement, I decided to just bail and go with pfSense.

TP-Link Omada is easier to setup and manage. Costs less than Ubiquiti for the same performance.
Was thinking about Omaha but wasn't sure about possibilities of China spying on you, and cuz Ubiquiti has a larger user base for support. Your thoughts?

What about static DHCP allocation load/unload with some text lines or files without having to muck with 1000 gui clicks or big JSON/XML edits?

If we have 50 clients having static DHCP IPs, you have to be able to take them from router to router and reboot to provision etc.

I disagree. The UDMPro has been a solid addition to my home network.
I'll be honest - after using unifi for about 3 years, the udm is what pushed me towards replacing my usg-3 with pfsense. And I'll never go back now. You don't need a unifi gateway to use the access points and switches, and having a few graphs on the dashboard isn't really worth the feature loss or being forced to use cloud login on the udm.

I'm not going to lie, I have no idea what you're taking about and I've managed small companies with over 200 static IPs across multiple offices.

Personally if the question starts with "we have 50 clients" I wouldn't look at a <$200 router designed for prosumer home use.

It would be trivial to inspect traffic to see whether their products send data to China. I haven't seen reports of Omada devices doing that, though I don't know how deeply it's been analyzed. TP-Link is one of the few network vendors that support 3rd party router firmwares such as OpenWRT.

Ok. By 50 clients I just meant DHCP clients to give static IPs.

With USG is it easy to specify 200 static IPs? That was the question.
