"Easily shuckable "

= It's easy to remove the internal SATA drive for use without the USB enclosure

"in a non-destructible way "

= You can remove it without destroying the enclosure, so if you wanted or needed to, you could put it back the way it was and it would be difficult or impossible to tell that you had ever taken it apart

"for NAS or other use"

= Many people take the internal drives from these and put them in a NAS because these are typically good drives and much cheaper than buying the bare drive would be

"using a cut-up gift card or other plastic."

= The enclosure can be removed using anything similar to a plastic gift card, hotel room key, etc. YouTube has a ton of how-to videos for "Shucking" drives

"If you are susceptible to the 3.3v pin problem, it's easy enough to circumvent. "

= Some people (typically with older power supplies or older NAS units) may encounter a problem where the SATA power plug doesn't comply with the newer SATA spec that the drives expect. This is easily worked-around by using a small piece of Kapton tape or using a SATA power extension cable. Google if you need to do this.

"Last time I got essentially an Ultrastar Data Center drive in it."

= Many people get higher end drives inside these Easystore enclosures, the bare drives sometimes would cost 2x to >3x the cost of the Easystore drives.
Unless it is relevant to them and they don't know it yet. Dude's trying to learn.

I would just like to reiterate that when I had this EDAZ drive climb over 60C, it was during a scan for bad blocks which took hours to complete. Additionally, it was was still in the factory enclosure, and the ambient temperature was also warm.

The EDAZ has been discovered to be an enterprise level drive (not by me), so I wouldn't worry about it's reliability. The fact that it runs warm also doesn't mean it's always in a danger zone. It's just not a "cool" drive.

I don't know about your Synology, but my Qnap model doesn't have the ability to monitor temperature on external drives. I'm sure it could work fine, but there might not be a way to keep an eye on the temps, considering this could be a hot running drive in the factory enclosure.
Good point, did not think about the heating part, and no, synology doesn't monitor temps of external usb connected drives.

How do these fare in performance if hooked as an external drive to a NAS (Synology)? Anyone has tried it?
I've hooked other external USB drives to my Synology NAS, and they operate at full speed, and are easy to share over the network.

I doubt this would be any different.

Quote from In my experience there's some variability. :
Thanks for the detailed reply. I actually use sata extension cables in my giant tower case (cables on power supply will not reach) and they are missing the 3.3v wire apparently since the drives work once I hook them up to the extension. Can't do that in the NAS since the drives slide into a slot. Have to do the tape trick on them.

The main point of my reply/question was the fact that every time these drives go on sale, it is always posted that new power supplies will not have an issue but I think that is the exact opposite. From what I've read, unless you have a power supply made specifically for a network environment, you will have the issue.

In my experience it's variable. I picked up 2 10TB drives a few years back, both the same exact model. On the exact same PSU, one needed the modification, and the other didn't. My pet theory is that this is the PWDIS test that fails them out of enterprise into these enclosures.

White label for the 8TB, 12TB, and 14TB. I bought these when Best Buy had a sale and shuck them in 5 minutes. I got 14TB around $190 around Black Friday.

Currently in the stages of setting up a home NAS system. Are these no longer a good option for a Synology 220+?

From what I can gather, even the white labels still seem to be WD Red enterprise or NAS system drives, just relabeled. Is this not the case anymore?

Thanks for any info!

My theory is there is no difference and the price difference you pay between the consumer and enterprise is just warranty. It is like a hot water tank. You can buy it with 5 year warranty, 7 year and 10 year. You get the same hot water tank in the box, you are just paying more for the warranty but they package and sell it so you don't really think about it that way. I do find it hard to believe a former WD employee hasn't chimed in before with the scoop on what is really going on.
In your case, they could have just made the voltage change in mid model production and decided it wasn't worth it to give it a new model number. My first shucked drive was a red drive and it works fine on all power supplies, but all the rest I've gotten since have been white label and none of them have worked without a mod.

How noisy does this drive get? Audible from a chair 10 feet away? My first Easystore 4TB (with AC power) was not loud at all, but it has finally started to give me some issues about 6-7 years later. I have a second Easystore 8TB that I got about 2-3 years ago for use with a game console. That one is loud as hell at all times. I guess I am just wondering if there might have been any changes that might result in this one being quieter than the last Easystore 8TB I picked up.

EFAX (Red 256mb cache) is doubtful, but then CrystalDiskInfo will tell you without the need.
more likely to to be one of the UltraStar DC's

you'll get a fine NAS-spec or arguably better enterprise UltraStar DC either way.
what will vary is the He attribute

the Red is really for folks who want to resell to less knowledgeable folks buying these for a premium online.

Walmart wouldn't even have a SKU for an Easystore drive. Isn't it a BestBuy product?
