A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov's Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together.

Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions. But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer.

The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start. Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner: R. Daneel Olivaw. Worst of all was that the "R" stood for robot—and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!

A phenomenal book. A corner Stone in robotic science fiction. Isaac Asimov is one of the greats and if you haven't read this I recommend it. This is book two in the robot Series. Right after I Robot and right before the Naked Sun.
This is also a mystery. You might attract non-SF readers by adding that to the title. It is also part of the Foundation universe, which will attract zero non-SF readers.
I'll just add that you don't have to have read I, Robot to read this book.

It provides some context on robots in Asimov's universe, but this is the first part of a stand alone trilogy (that later got tied in with Foundation).

I remember reading this probably a couple decades ago. Great book. I likely have the paperback around here somewhere.

I too read these a long time ago in paperback. Definitely worth reading. Even if you aren't a Science Fiction fan, but, like mystery/suspense, you will most likely enjoy these books. My mother didn't and doesn't usually read SciFi but wanted something to read and wasn't up to going to the bookstore library. (She is big into mystery, suspense, and thrillers.) I gave her this trilogy and she was disappointed it wasn't a longer series.

I don't know about a cult but all of the books in the series were a very good read and were some of the first books I had my son read when he was 11 or 12. Very easy to read but very enjoyable.

Don't forget the Foundation TV series is coming out on Apple TV+ soon. If you haven't watched the trailers try, check then out on YouTube - the quality looks like it's gonna be really good!
