Hold out to save $8?
Due to the current chip shortage, all signs show that prices of every piece of computer hardware will be going up in the near future. There's a very good chance you'll be waiting until the end of the year for prices to go down.
8TB and larger WD drives are PMR.

Sounds interesting, how much is then NAS build? 7 disk NAS is not cheap.
my total cost was about $250. I reused an old gigabyte motherboard, an old intel i5 3470, old memory, and the hard drives from ebay were $200 total, sas controller and cables were another 30 or 40.
reused an old case as well. Cost me next to nothing. There's a guy on youtube, dbtech that has instructional videos on how to set up omv and jellyfin, it's pretty easy, but there is a learning curve if you're new to linux.

So I paid $250 for my setup, reusing some old parts I had laying around, vs paying 150-200 each x 4-8 which comes out to almost 1k just for drives.. and they're slower 5400 rpm shucked drives..

Maybe a stupid question...

Based on the comments that WD had changed which HD is in the Easystore case, is there any way of knowing prior to "shucking" it open to look? Model number, manufacturing date, etc?

Thanks in advance!

Good idea. Trying to get an idea prior to buying. Example of purchasing from Best Buy, return policy is difficult if the packaging is open.

I am wondering about info on the outside of the package to indicate.

Mine arrived today! Shucking it was quite easy and I'm currently transferring 4 TB from 2 separate drives onto it.

Just transferred 7TB between an old EasyStore to a new one. This new drive runs way too hot to be in an enclosure without a fan.

Running CrystalDiskInfo:
- New 8TB EasyStore - 61c
- 4yr old 8TB EasyStore - 50c

I already had a bunch of old A-usb3.0 cables, but these are usually around $4 each.

This seems to be the regular sale price on 8TB.

What is bad about SMR HDD's?

Thanks
