However, I am really tempted to roll the dice for Feb or Mar of next year. Perhaps that is enough time for them to work out a proper scheme to welcome gaijin.

Even if you're allowed in there will most likely be around a 2 week quarantine even if you're vaccinated. You might end up paying more for food and lodging. Not to mention God forbid you catch COVID. You might have to end up paying hospital bills and have to stay longer than intended.
Also the situation is constantly changing, even if you're clear you might not be able return to the US if the variants cause another wave.
For me under normal circumstances I'd totally jump on this deal. However I think this is a situation where airlines are getting desperate. They're unfortunately bleeding out lost potential income because of the pandemic. They're taking a big loss with this deal. They're banking on people thinking it's cheap and buying, then it's too late to cancel and get a refund if they can use it. Even for those that do end up traveling they're going to have to purchase a return flight unless they want to be stuck at the airport until their return trip.
I guess if you have the extra cash then go for it. As for me I cannot waste that much amount of money for the chance of a cheap flight.
Boy was I happy this February I didn't have that ticket to fight over with Air Canada.
Lesson learned. We don't know what we don't know. Those that are willing to roll the dice... Good luck.

I booked March 5 to 18th for $240. Keeping my fingers crossed thats in time for some cherry blossoms. Heard they were early this year.
I called to ask to use my 2020 voucher on this flight... and they said no though hehe.
Said it was a pricing mistake and i was lucky to have that, so they won't cancel the flight but won't let me use a voucher to get my cost to $0 hehe.

"Do I have to choose a new flight right away?
No. If you cancel your flight and don't choose a new one right away, you'll get a flight credit that you can use up to one year from your original ticket issue date."

I managed to place a 7 day farelock on PHX to Tokyo (which also had a similar discount) Thursday night. As the $254 price is low enough to use the credit for a domestic trip, I will likely pay for the fare right before the farelock expires.
If conditions don't appear to improve 3 months from travel, I will then cancel it and use the credit for domestic travel before the end of April 2022.

Has anyone else received a warranting of a potential cancellation?

Price, gave an option to purchase the fare for $2500 or cancellation. Did you purchase United?
