So how do you purchase brake parts for your car? I'm a young adult that's looking into fixing my upper beater and I would like to know how to find good parts and good prices for my car. Basically learning how to fix my car.
I asked about how purchasing tires worked awhile back and people seemed to help. Thx

Rockauto.com is a good place to start and usually cheaper than Autozone/advance auto as long as the shipping isn't too bad. Plug in your car's year make and model and they'll give you all the different parts available and show you the different options from manufactures. For brakes unless you're going very high end the stopping power is going to be roughly the same, at the consumer level the biggest differences are noise level and the amount of dust they generate (expensive brands being quieter and cleaner than cheaper versions).

Changing brakes is fairly straightforward and can be done with basic hand tools. If you search your car brake replacement on YouTube, there's probably several videos of someone else doing the job on your car. Couple of things to keep in mind. Technically you should get your rotors resurfaced when you change your pads, but if you're saving money and you replaced the pads before they started getting too worn down you can probably skip it. Also rotors aren't very expensive so it might be worth replacing versus resurfacing (just know sometimes they can be a pain to take off). Make sure to open the brake fluid lid when pushing the brake piston back, but then close it as soon as your done to minimize any water that the brake fluid can absorb. If you're replacing the rotor, make sure to secure the caliper so it's not hanging by the brake line. A metal clothes hanger can easily hold it up and bend to whatever your car needs.

The last couple times I bought my brake pads from eBay, they were a lot less expensive than an online store. Most sellers there have free shipping and some no sales tax. Just remember to get the right ones whether they be semi metallic or ceramic for your application. The entry level brake pads will be less expensive but they leave a lot more brake dust on your wheels. Will need a c-clamp or similar to push the piston back up into the caliper. If you need new rotors go with a good brand. I have bought aftermarket ones before and they were junk they warped really quick from heat. Don't forget to bleed your brakes until the fluid comes out clear from farthest away to closest to the reservoir in order when you're done and top off the fluid to the max line in the reservoir. This will take a second person to pump on and hold the brake pad.
