However, I tested them and found that they will take only cases where the liability on the part of the airline is quite clear and you could easily handle the matter yourself.
If the event happened after Brexit then the rule applies if the flight was to depart from any airport in the EU, but possibly not if it was taking off from outside the EU and landing in the EU, since in that case the airline would have to be headquartered in the EU.

Keep in mind you will also earn quite a few miles if you purchase the flight, especially as a Premier member.
Base miles earned, around 3500. $675 x 5 pts/$ on your AMEX Platinum = 3375 points. So at the minimum you are earning nearly 7000 miles for your $675 ticket, and substantially more if you are a Silver or Gold member.
That's not even factoring in the value of the PQP and PQF if you're trying to reach status.
