A few months ago, two friends and I purchased Hero 9s to use during canyon runs and city driving. All three of us were disappointed to learn that most of our clips were cut short and the cameras had shut off due to heat issues.
A quick search of "Hero 9 heat" will show you loads of owners complaining about the same thing. Thermal throttling kicks in and shuts the camera off to protect it. Some owners resort to attaching actual heatsinks to the camera, which is crazy.
Now, I would totally understand (but would still be disappointed) if the camera couldn't handle 80, 90, or even 100* weather. BUT, we were using the cams on a cloudy Los Angeles day, highs being ~65*F back in February. Customer service let me know that I can "point a fan at the Hero to cool the camera" to improve performance. No thanks.
I've had prior Heros, but returned this and will wait for future iterations that can address these issues. Thankfully, their CS is easy to deal with and fully refunded the camera cost and the 1-year subscription.
*Edit: GoPro says that heat issues may be caused by incompatible memory cards, but we confirmed that all three of our SD cards were on GoPro's "approved list."
FWIW, I own two GoPro 9 and it's love/hate relationship. I love the picture quality and the colors (out of the box, I don't edit/color correct). Also horizon leveling and hypersmooth have been excellent. It's my favorite camera for videos.
It used to be very buggy for a few months after release, with frequent shutdowns where I lost some of my videos. Really frustrating. They appear to have fixed most issues with recent firmware updates. Haven't had random shutdowns for a while.
Haven't hit any major overheating issues yet. I've ran it for hours on my chesty harness or with a magnetic mount on the hood of my truck. It was fall/winter/spring time though, so maybe summer climate will stress it out more.
If you really need a GoPro right now, this is a great deal. If you are looking to upgrade from your current one, I would wait until fall.
BTW, I have Sony FDR-100V, DJI Osmo Action, DJI Osmo Pocket (and Pocket 2). I still prefer quality/colors out of GoPro 9. Everyone has their own preferences though.

The unfortunate reality is that there really is no alternative and everyone loves the look gopro footage so unless u don't care about that I wouldn't stray away from buying this due to "overheating issues" cause ur never gonna get that gopro look with any other cam out there....
With that being said I love my gopro 9 I'm buying a second, and probably a third with this deal.

I filmed in doors around 60-80 *F, maybe in 10 minute segments at the longest. I was not a fan of the camera already and this sealed the deal to return. Very easy return, though!

(Low resolution recording has the same issue too)
Unfortunately, when I knew this issue, my return period was over and GoPro offered me discount coupon. WTH.. not recommend GoPro.
