Feel free to edit this Wiki with your store and price to help others that might be in the same area as you.
To check the stock: go to the Ikea app search box, "Scan to search", "Enter article number manually", type in "50106773" and hit "Okay". You can now see the product page and go to "In stock/Out of stock in..." and change to other stores (the search doesn't work with zip, only store name, usually the city, or state).

My older model Gerton's have been used unfinished (only sanded) as a desk for 4-5 years now and are in perfect condition, but I have an IKEA desk mat (really great quality, metal backed and can use magnets on it) on it where my arms are and a cup holder clamped to the pipe frame so there is no spill risk for me.
There is a really good imgur post about finishing these to a near mirror gloss finish so you can dress them up as much or as little as you want. They do take finish very nicely but if you're going to do any finishing, you HAVE to do a bunch of sanding because they come very lightly oiled.
It's solid wood, but there are strips of metal recessed underneath for reinforcement.
Others have mentioned the need to finish the wood somehow -- I did not do this, and I haven't had any issues. However, I do have an XXL desk mat, so I'm not really feeling the raw wood that often. If you intend to actually write at the desk rather than type, then finishing may be beneficial.
Oh, but definitely use a coaster.
