Ikea has the GERTON 61 x 29.5" solid Beech wood tabletop on sale at multiple stores across the US.
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/gert...-50106773/

YMMV and IN-STORE B&M only. Stock and prices vary per store.
I found mine at the Draper, UT store for $80, though others have found it cheaper at their local stores ($50 @ Portland, OR & $60 @ Woodbridge, VA).

Official word hasn't come out yet, but rumor has it that this tabletop will soon be discontinued because of the increasing price of wood.

Definitely worth it even at $80, considering that this tabletop had been out of stock at many stores for awhile up until around last month.

As of 5/16 the Charlotte, NC store price was $80.

Anyone have been there since?
Damn, I ordered online and they were $100. Charlotte is 3 hours away and I have a 2 year old, plus I was ordering a shit ton of stuff for a new house anyway.

Is it possible to trim this table depth down from 29.5"? From what I'm reading, it requires you to finish it with at least some poly. But if I cut into the wood, would that expose anything that would ruin the table?
The length of the table makes it a bit tricky to trim depth, but with the right table saw or track saw, you could do it (probably want to make multiple passes). It's solid wood, so the only think you'd expose is more wood.

If it's against a wall, just cut the unwanted width off the back edge. The raw wood will be hidden.

Yes if you originally used Ikea Family thing.

Don't call the store though. 😜

You have to be careful because all Gerton tables have two metal supports underneath it going from front to back. They are in grooves and flush mounted, but they go nearly the entire depth of the table so if you're going to cut off more than 1-2" of depth, you are going to need to remove them. They are held in with simple screws so removing them is easy, but the groove will be visible on the cut edge so make sure you put the cut edge against a wall.

I think they put the metal bars there because they assume people are going to use IKEA legs for the table top since the holes for them are pre-drilled in the bottom of the Gerton but if you're using it to make your own frame or put it on file cabinets or something, you don't need to worry about the extra stability the metal bits might provide.

I would also point out that all four sides of the Gerton table have a very slight beveled edge. It is tiny, maybe 1/8th of an inch, but if you cut one edge that edge will obviously not match the others. I personally redid all the edges on mine to have closer to a 1/4 inch 45 degree bevel but if you don't have access to a router it will not match.

All that said, there is no reason you can't trim it down. A circ saw and straight edge would get the job done. Just make sure to remove that metal bar and know that you'll need to rout the edges again if you want it all to match. I would also say to make sure you do NOT cut along any of the seams. The seams of the individual boards run the full width of the table and each board is 1.5" deep so I would plan to make your cuts every 3/4"-1" from the back edge or so to leave enough meat on that cut edge. So it is a 29.5" depth, I'd plan to make your cuts around 28.5, 27.5, 26.5, etc. That should leave you .5-.75" of board on the cut edge. Maybe up to 1" if you're going to clamp monitors or something to it.

Thanks for the tip. I decided against trimming it and just finished it with poly. The metal beams were a surprise. Usually these types of beams are to prevent cupping of the board over time so they are necessary if used as a table top.

One of my very early Gerton tops actually started to develop a split between boards right at the screw of the metal beam so on all my subsequent ones I've completely loosened the screws on the beams and then when the thing is finally mounted in its final resting place, re-tightened just to be safe.

It is strange because the crack/split between boards happened in an area that was under zero load and not even close to where its legs were screwed in so I think it could have also just been bad luck and nothing anything I did or anything the beams did.

All the others, and I've had 6 or 7 of these at this point, have been rock solid.

Charlotte, NC is still $80. They had 24 3 weeks ago. They still had 24 so ZERO sold in 3 some weeks I suppose. BUT. They did not reduce the price. I still picked up 2 as I did not want to waste a long drive there. Planning to get the price adjusted in 90 days.
