CA requires a back-up battery because of wild fires. If you need to evacuate quickly, you'll want to use your car. Some people may only have an accessible car in the garage but if the power is out, how will they open the garage open? Yes, there's the emergency cord to manually open and close the door. But not many know about it, know how to operate it or even have the strength to operate it. Imagine your elderly parents in a panic trying to evacuate quickly and but don't have arm strength to pull on the emergency cord or not tall enough or the car is in the way of getting access to it. Then the real panic and irrational thinking starts to set in. But if the garage door can operate with just a backup battery in case of emergency, that's a great peace of mind to have for a little extra $. CA firefighters have found people who died in their garage trying to get out, especially the elderly. Hence the CA law requires backup battery.
Until your power goes out. It's my main entrance to my house. Power goes off while I am not there it gets tricky. It's happened more than once here in the midwest
I think they're being technically proper is all it is: horsepower is always an equivalency measurement. The power of motor "X" is equivalent to "Y" horsepower - which is a measurement devised by James Watt to compare steam engines to work previously done by horses.

Currently have an older garage that I manually have to open. Would this work for any particular garage door? I reached out to Home Depot expert no luck on the response. Thought I ask. Thanks for the responses.

I will be damned if i can find out how to actually get it to add install for 87. It shows it on the services page but I cannot figure out a way to add it to the purchase.

The reason I want to buy this from Amazon is that HD shows $237 for me. How do I bring it down to $195?
See if you can purchase just the service with this link https://www.homedepot.com/c/cost_...sem-cg-faq

The HD $87 install is for new garage door. If you only need to install garage opener, can you still get this installed?

As someone who installs Liftmaster's, which are made by Chamberlain. I'd try to find a Chamberlain/Liftmaster DC Chain Opener, they're still quiet and operate a little slower putting less stress on door. Also with the chain you have less chance of the door slightly binding or belt being slightly lose and jumping gears and losing it's travel limits. However that being said, this doesn't take away from the discount and this being a good deal.

Have this same opener with the deadbolt add-ones in my house for the last two years. Works great on a 7 foot single bay door. Nice and quiet too. Wifi connectivity and app access is nice plus it is Amazon Key ready.
I got mine on a Lowe's clearance in Sep 2018 (where's the time machine?) but wouldn't hesitate paying this price today.

I replaced my chain-driven model with this one, and it's like night and day. It is whisper quiet, critical when you have a room above the garage. One thing to note is that if you don't have a "standard" garage door height (I think it's 7'), then you'll have to pay another ~$50 for the correct-length rail extension and throw the one that came with the opener away. I wish they just sold the motor at $50 less and then required you to purchase the right rail and belt for $50 based on the height of your garage door.

The battery has also been a great feature when the power went out. It avoids the hassle of having to open/close it by hand. Also, if you're leaving and close it by hand, nothing is stopping someone from coming by and opening it. With the battery, you can open/close it several times.

If you can spend the 5 minutes to learn how to open your garage door manually I'd probably skip anything with a "battery backup" and just get a cheaper one. Unless you live in a state where the legislature decided you're too stupid to handle this.
Sure, you can open the garage door manually, but if it's snowing or raining and you drive up to your house, it's nice to be able to open it up from within your car. This battery backed-up model is on sale for the same price as the non-battery model, so why not buy it?

Same! B980 in September 2018 for $85 after military discount. One of the best scores of the year. Did a self-install-- still running great.

Screw California for trying to keep you safe.
Government should only be giving tax breaks to the rich.
Theyve suffered enough.
