I'm on the east coast also with a distribution center right up the street. Still takes 5 days. Hell, the site even says up front that the expected delivery is that long.
Walmart+ shipping has been superior to Amazon Prime these days from my experience. Ever since COVID Amazon takes their time sending orders out. Now it takes almost a full week to receive things that are supposed to have prime shipping where it used to come in 1-2 days. My Walmart+ orders always come in 2 days or less.
That's what I notice too. Prime used to take 2 days, now majority of the time it takes 4. Ordered something on Sunday they said it would be delivered Thursday (that's tomorrow).

Would like nothing better than for Walmart to step up their game to increase the competition, but compared to Amazon they are still not there on the reliable shipping side. When I go Walmart it is still on on the brick side availability.
Had two packages arrive locally (one after an errand from TX to MA to the Deep South) only to ship out of the local USPS distribution center and go out of state for two or three days. Then return to local USPS distribution center and take another THREE days for a package to be delivered to a post office box that is less than 3 miles from the distribution center.
Can't blame it all on amazon. They do rely after all on the ever worsening USPS.
At the end of the day it's on Amazon to get the product to you in the time that they specify. The primary issue with Amazon is that they are now posting 4-5 day expected arrival times for prime items. It's crazy. Can't blame Covid forever.
Let's be clear, paying for membership at COSTCO has now everyone (greedy businesses) trying to charge YOU to be able to buy at their stores..
............people are truly stoopid.
Lasting we need in society are shopping classes. Elite, "members" and peasantry.
Amazon is now allowing foreign Chinese entrepreneurs to sell directly from their site.
In the end, everything is about *value* and economies of scale. If the value isn't there, simply move on. The price to play is not outrageous for any of the wholesale/retail places, but simply offers a reliable revenue stream.
Combine Aldi and Target instead. This membership is a waste of money. It's simply a subsidy for their app development team. Not worth at even half-price.

I have both. Prime since it probably came out and Walmart+ for the last 5 months or so. Amazon has been letting me down. Taking well over 2 days for "prime items". Walmart I can get the items the same day or next. That includes just ordering a thing of dog treats for $5. They show up via doordash within a few hours. It says 1 or 2 days but I get an email after ordering saying congratulations your order will be delivered early.
I get the doordash delivery with my regular $35 and over orders. The lines at Walmart can be atrocious most of the time, so W+ might be worth it to some folks. They also have FedEx drop off returns to make it easy to do online returns. My only gripe about Walmart is that many of the online items that I would buy are store pickup only, so I'm still not sold on W+.

I found a loophole to get free shipping on Walmart and other websites. All that you need to do is to buy the item that you want, and then put another item in your cart that either takes you over the price for free shipping, or is a preorder. Then, when your transaction is complete, you immediately cancel the other item, or the preorder item, and you will still get free shipping on the remaining items that aren't cancelled. Even if you don't reach the $35 amount to qualify. This also works on shipments of smaller items like toys, where it tells you that they are "add on" items, and that they won't ship unless you have $35 worth of stuff in your cart. So far, I have got this to work on Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Best Buy's websites.

Can you please share some examples of the items you've been ordering?
I've found Walmart+ to be absolutely, totally - useless. As a free shipping service at least - for those who use it for local grocery deliveries or for gas discounts, there may be some benefit to it. But unlike Prime, the subset of products on Walmart's site that are Plus eligible is much smaller than that of Prime.
Worst of all - if there's ever any kind of deal, you can forget Plus shipping, Walmart just won't do it. With Amazon, you can get all kinds of crazy Prime deals on things that they probably lose money on when you factor in shipping. Not on the Walmart side - you can rest assured that if it's any kind of deal, it's either in store or it's not happening.
As for shipping times, I get nowhere close to the same speed with Walmart as I do with Prime. Case in point for both the Hart mower and trimmers I ordered. The mower was almost a week of lead time (ended up just picking up in store), and the trimmer offered next day shipping, which in fact meant it shipped the next day and I got it 4 days later.
I wanted Plus to be a great alternative for some good competition, but it ended up being a giant bust.

This is the worst comparison ever - Costco charges a membership fee because that's where they make the majority of their money. They make a small overhead percentage on each item (IIRC less than 10%), and the rest of their profit comes from that membership. This allows you to purchase items on average for far less than you would anywhere else.
Comparing that to any kind of class based system is powerfully ignorant.

The crappy thing that Amazon does is with their third parties. They allow them to advertise times that are Prime and end up being anything but. It's typically the Chinese drop shippers who quickly post a shipping number that doesn't resolve to anything for a few days, and if you call them out on it (through Amazon's deliberately arcane messaging system) they'll pass along the problem as a USPS or UPS issue when in fact they just issue a shipping number when they get the order knowing full well it's not going to be in transit until at least several days later.
