Depends on your use case. A desktop consumes more electricity, larger, noisier, but is more powerful for desktop applications. Pi's are opposite plus has GPIO header for projects and expansion HATS.

The Aluminum edition case appears to be a remarked FLIRC case, which was the original Pi passive cooled case, but IMHO the newer Argon Neo, iUniker, and Geekworm passive cases are superior. They tend to have contact sinks for chips other than the cpu on the Pi that produce heat, and gaps for GPIO and camera ribbons. Search "pi 4 passive aluminum case" on Amazon for examples.
It's overkill for the pi4, but pihole [pi-hole.net] is amazing. It's a network wide spam filter. No more ads on mobile
I'm pretty sure that's what they were trying to say with the "overkill" part, though to be fair they didn't word it well.

I'd like to run MotionEye, HomeAssistant, and maybe PiHole. Can I do it all on one device (and do it smoothly), or does each one need its own device?

It's amazing on paper, but a real pain in the ass when it breaks everyone's niche websites. Constantly tweaking your whitelist is not fun.

Are any of the options a good deal to run a media/backup center? Have a 12TB external disk I could use for storage.
I set up a 4GB model with a 10TB USB external HD for this very purpose. I attached mine via LAN cable to a wireless router. It runs 7x24. Will reboot it maybe every one or two weeks...not because there are problems but just as routine maintenance. In general, it has run flawlessly. There a real pro's and con's.

Pro
  • Lots of websites with "how to" information for many projects
  • In general, all SW / utilities are public domain and free
  • Surprising flexibility
  • Low power consumption
Con
  • Some technical skills required. Although many of the common utilities and browsers may have a GUI, inevitably you will find yourself working at the command line / script level even for ordinary tasks.
  • As it pertains to a media server / streamer, performance is not all that great unless you are willing to set up your files in a native Raspberry format. I keep my files in NTFS for interoperability purposes and it will stream without stuttering but do not expect to update or manage the files quickly or timely.. The Raspberry does not support NTFS natively so everything goes thru wrapper of sorts. If I try to upload files from a Windows device thru the Raspberry, thruput tops out at maybe 7 or 8MB/sec. When I do back ups or major file updates, I detach the external HD from the Raspberry and hook up to a Windows machine. Just simpler and faster. If you are comfortable in setting up a native Raspberry environment, I have read posts that the bottlenecks disappear and that the Raspberry can begin to transfer files in the +100MB/s range.
  • Have found the bluetooth function to be flaky. Haven't invested the time to figure out what the problem is.
  • Although using it as a "media server", would not classify as a true server in my implementation. Mine is setup using SMB (simplest) but only one device can use it at a time. If other devices attempt to access, will receive a not available / busy reply.
I setup mine on a "smart" receptacle and can start or power down remotely using combination of desktop and smartphone apps.

I have been curious for a while. The main thing that I would want to do is set up a media player. I already have the media server and run Plex. And I use either Roku or Firestick on the TV's .

The question is..is there really anything to be added by building a media player out of this?

For comparison, if you live near a Microcenter they have their RPi4 "desktop kit" on sale for $110:

Super tempting. Really don't "need" something like this but I suppose I can justify it as for "upkeep of technical skills" if the wife asks....lol

What's the advantage of this over the Pi400? Watched a few reviews and apparently the pi400 has better cooling.

Anyone using a PI to just to seed torrents. Been having some issues with Plex buffering due to my vpn (used for torrenting) trying to find something cheap to be able to take care of seeding without having to rely on my main sever.

You can install the Home Assistant image and run MotionEye and AdGuard (Pi Hole replacement) on Home Assistant.

Too true. Especially when a website that had been working suddenly stops working and you don't realize it was pihole that did it. Ran into that a few times.

Personally, I don't bother with the whitelist. Most of the links on SD, for example, get blocked since they are redirects. In that case, I just search for whatever the item is on the Google and it comes up. Or disable pihole for a few minutes to do what I gotta do. But that solution won't work for everybody.

pi is more than capable of running transmission+vpn.

what about a Windows Stick PC?

how does Pi compare
I don't use windows and don't own any of those stick pc since they're proprietary and limited expansion and future support, but generally if you need to run windows because of familiarity and specific windows only applications then buy a windows computer.

However there is growing ecosystem overlap of applications on both platforms plus proof of concept emulation on each, thus that windows PC for windows software stance is now falling into gray area.

I recommend checking out ETAPrime YouTube channel has he covers single board computers and tiny PCs. Very good coverage of what each are and are not capable of doing.
