That's not how laser works...
So what? I'm not reporting scientific data on the thing. Just what I've experienced in my daily use of it. First time it ever tripped for laser scanning.

Radar detectors have an industry shortage which is why prices are up. This is due to silicon shortage.

I've been watching for a deal on the R7 for several months. This is the best one that's come along so far. But I don't know much about Woot. What is the general experience with refurbished products from Woot? Is it likely to be "like new"? What about Uniden refurbs? Are they reliable?

How much warning does this buy you? About 2-3 seconds at 70 miles/hr?

There is no one correct answer to your question. It depends on so many factors. Terrain, weather, location/direction, stationary vs moving, traffic, radar band, constant vs instant-on, and more. On a straight, flat road, with no particular issues, it is not uncommon to get an alert well over a mile from the source, and generally you'd expect much more than that. But if you get an off-axis hit, it could be very short. Over time you'd get used to your detector and have better ideas, but in my experience, you'd nearly always have that much time or more with this level of a detector on most bands.

Laser is a different story. Usually if you get a laser hit , it's a ticket notifier function, because the narrow laser beam has hit your car at the time it is detecting it. Doesn't work the same way radar beams do, where a good detector will alert you before the signal will alert the LEO.

do these get false positives frequently due to other cars (adaptive cruise, etc)? my escort 9500ix seems to get tons of signals on the highway.
I have the R3 and it does. Blind spot assist systems will usually set off K band. These are the longest range detectors,. That's one of the compromises you make for excellent range.

For radar, these are phenomenal. I've received warnings miles in advance on the freeway. For laser it's pretty worthless like all other detectors.

I think so. The next time there's an actual, post chip shortage deal on one I'm upgrading to the R7 from the R3. The R3 works well, but I've had enough times where I wish I knew the direction of the signal I was being alerted about.

The R7 showing the direction is really the only thing worth upgrading for, the range is a lot longer but the range is already very very good on the R3.

I believe the range should be the same.

Thanks. This follow up question may be difficult to answer: what percentage of traffic stops are radar vs laser? I'm surprised that law enforcement doesn't switch entirely to lasers.
