First off, the left side of the grill is definitely hotter. When grilling, the back left is considerably hotter than everywhere else, like more than 100 degrees hotter than the right side. If you need to grill on the right third of the grill (i.e. burgers) just start on that side first, then add the rest of the food to the middle and left side 5-10 minutes later.
If smoking, you really need to buy an Amaze-n smoke generator. If you run the grill on the "smoke" setting, you'll be lucky to get temps up to 150 and mine has always snuffed out the fire after running around 80 degrees for an hour. When you smoke, do the normal pre-heating then drop the temp to the 250 setting and the pid smoke setting to 1. Anything higher leads to wild temp swings, like >400 degrees for minutes. The hopper just doesn't cycle well. Wait 1/2 hour at that setting to give it time to settle. Then light up the Amaze-n and put it in the grill once its ready.
With smoking, the back left runs 20-40 degrees hotter than the front right. I really only smoke 3-5# butts due to my family size, so I never really get too close to the hot spots. You'll still have occasional spikes to about ~325 if you open the doors at all, but they go away pretty quick. For the most part the temp stays between 225 and 275. I refill the hopper every 3 hours or so. You can set it to 225 on the dial, but I've found it sometimes drops to 175 and that makes the stall suck even more.
Also a thermometer with multiple probes is a must. Don't trust the dome temp or the digital temp on the grill. They're accurate, but the temps vary so much in the grill itself that its not useful. I think if you set up an extra heat shield above the hopper it would greatly help with the heat fluctuations, but for the price its good for what it does. It makes about 12-16 burgers depending on their size. Its more than enough for a family of 4 to have leftovers, but don't expect to have a massive party with it. I think I've made 2 racks of ribs laying them on the grates. Also, just get rid of the tray that goes in the top of the grill. Its completely useless and just gets in the way.
