Hi Lilyly -

Here's a chart to determine the type of filter you need based on the job you're working:

https://www.uwsp.edu/rmgt/Documen...poster.pdf

Hope this helps
Pretty much any situation that generates lingering airborne dust you are going to want a half-mask respirator like this over a kn95. While kn95 may be adequate in terms of the material's ability to filter particles, the biggest differentiator of the "kn" ratings to the "n" ratings has to do with fitment. "n" rated masks have to maintain a proper seal (and usually technically require an extensive fitting and training process to use appropriately) to ensure that all air entering the mask is forced through the filter material. KN masks are good for filtering occasional incidental directional particles, which is why they've been used for COVID-19 protection, but some portion of the air you are breathing in remains unfiltered, which makes them a poor choice for the types of situations where half mask respirators are generally used.

Edit: I used "n" ratings in my description, whereas the included filters with this mask are "p" rated (which is why they are pink). The only difference there is that the "p" filters are resistant to oil, whereas "n" filters are not. Their ratings are otherwise the same.
These filters also filter vapors so it's good for painting and varnishing.

For cosplay sure. Lol. Probably fine for cleaning up dusty environments as well. But ear loops aren't nearly as tight as n95... So some blowby and suck by will occur. Just a matter of how much.
what do you mean? my medical graded n98 masks are also ear loops.

To my knowledge, all N95s need to go over your head (I've never heard of N98 masks)

I don't understand the filter listed as: NIOSH approved: OV/AG/P100

So what is this good for? Is it good against COVID? What about against general home improvement projects dust?

Correct. There isn't a single niosh approved n95 that is ear looped. Medical graded is not the same, and most of those are fake grading. N95 do not fall under the astm classification, nor are they fda logoed.
Most I've seen are falsely labeled anyway. Not saying they don't work at all, but if you've worn both, you'd know there is no way the kn ear loops can provide a good enough seal to your face.

Of course If you have facial hair, you might as well just use a cloth mask as everything will just leak around anyways.

typo, n95. and there are tons of them out there, n95 earloops. my workplace has these earloop n95s since last year. yes, we have both but the earloop type is popular too.

Ov is organic vapors.
Ag is acid gas
P is strongly resistant to oil, 100 means filtration level (99.97 .3 microns absolute). It will filter particules smaller than .3, but it's not at 99.97 percent.

You don't need this cartridge for covid, but will work for covid.
Once opened, the vapor absorbing component will absorb stuff out of the air; that part will then stop working as it is saturated. The filter part will continue working until it is physically clogged. If using only for general respiration, that could take weeks or possibly a few months before performance is degraded.

How do you know if the filter is degraded and need replacement?

Yes and not a single one niosh approved. There is an approval list. Ear loops are popular because it's easier to put on.
Those n95 are at best kn95s.

Btw there are tons of unscrupulous individuals who sell knock off filters for 3m as well. And they even have similar looking boxes, halogeaph sticker too.

When smells come through , the filter for the ov/av is depleted.
As for the particulate filtering aspect, replace when breathing becomes difficult.
Again not the preferred cartridge for covid. It's heavier, and actually has slightly less filtering capacity (not effectiveness) than some of the other filters. 7093s have a hard plastic for a seal check and can be wiped down after use. These the filter point directly out, which means they are subjected to possible direct impact and damage. (not that common)
I actually use a set of these when cleaning with chemicals. after every use, I take them off, put ina zipper bag. I get a few months that way.

Which is the preferred catridge for COVID?

I'm assuming I can just buy a different catridge for this respirator. Also, really appreciate the information. Thank you!!

just checked but i dont think i would handle those kind of gas and substances in my house. my kn95 masks are fine for now.

just curious. what tasks are you doing for "home use" that really require this.
I tested several KN95 masks at the beginning of the pandemic... the fit was very subpar even compared to cheap n95 masks, let alone this. Will they keep out big particles and such? Probably, but for $20, you know your lungs are protected. Sarcoidosis sucks, like really really sucks (15 year RN here)

I've used the homeowners version of this work with stains, thinners. fiberglass (boat and car). I actually find it more comfortable than paper kn/n95 masks with thin straps. plus I sound like Darth Vader. Plus if you are wearing safety glasses, the venting on thus helps prevent fogging. paper masks are horrible for that.

Kn95 masks are very misleading. The material that they are made of can theoretically capture 0.3 micron particle sizes but the gaps around the top and sides make the mask pretty much useless. Guaranteed to be breathing in construction dust.
