Got these for about $140 or $150 about 18 months ago IIRC. The headband feels cheap and plasticy, but…

Comfortable and good balanced sound. Can't go wrong at this price point.

Thank you. Bought mine three weeks ago for $150 and I'm going to try to get the difference refunded.

Update: Drop refunded me the price difference with an email request.

I have both and I would say the X2 are better for gaming/movies as they have more bass, soundstage is great, and you can slap a v-moda boompro mic and you're good to go.

The 58X are better for music imo as they are more detailed and have amazing mids, so it's preference, really. I always switch out between the 2 headphones.

How do these compare to the Sony xm4's in terms of sound quality for music and movies.
Much better for most music. Explosions will be more impactful on the XM4 so if you enjoy them good ol' Michael Bay 'splosion movies, these will not give you that punch. No ANC either. In all other aspects of sound, though, these will still be better than the XM4 for movies.

Crazy how I bought these a few days ago for $170! I just contacted them for a price adjustment. Hopefully they'll approve my request. Thanks for the post!

I think getting the price refunded could be a bit of a hassle because there are no returns at Massdrop... So we have no leverage
This is completely inaccurate. Right off the product page:

"US customers may return or exchange these items in new, unused condition within 30 days of delivery by contacting Drop Support."

That's not to say they'll refund the difference, but Drop not accepting returns is entirely not the case.

Oh. Then I stand corrected. Maybe there has been a policy change. My understanding was that since they buy in bulk, they couldn't return.

put furniture felt on this and it will blow your mind!!! Best mods every for this and it will cost you under 3 to 5 dollars.
I did this mod but used a a cutout from a cheap dust mask filter inner liner (almost like a coffee filter) with double sided tape. Most amazing headphone now. Without the mod, the headphones are just "okay" imo. I never tried felt but i'm sure it's more or less very similar.

The best $500 or less audiophile and gaming headphones is going to be a DT880 Beyerdynamic 600 ohm version. But at $129 for the HD58x is a deal.
No way jose. DT880 was my first headphone over $100. I've since moved on to X2, 598, 6xx, 560, and others mentioned here, all of which I prefer to the DT880. It was sold long ago.

How does this compare with HD 599?
Not an audiophile myself perse, but asked someone about it when the 599 SEs were on sale for $100. He owns both, said that although he can tell the difference between the 58x and the 599s if he tries to, they sound similar enough that he doesn't have a preference between them for general use. He did recommend 560S if you want to spend a little more for better sound though. Having said that, audio is really subjective, ymmv.

to be fair the DT1990 pros were $400 a few weeks ago. that was a steal although still not sure id drop 400 on a pair of cans for gaming.
The secret is the DT880 600 ohm version. The rest of the lineup from Beyerdynamic is pretty garbage.

Everything that you mentioned "you moved on to" are great for audiophile hi-res music. You didn't carefully read what I wrote. Let me repeat:

Gaming and Audiophile. Not just audiophile. The DT880 has a surprisingly accurate and clear soundstage and imaging which is crucial for gaming. Now if you did your research on the 598, 6xx, 560 then you'll know that soundstage or imaging is complete garbage. LOL

How do you like that 3-blob soundstage so far? hahahha

Wired headphones.

Bought these a few years ago from Massdrop. Sound was decent, but clamping force/pressure was just too much for me, even after trying to reduce it by bending the headband. No matter what I did, these were just not comfortable for me.
This user probably has a massive skull. I have short-med length hair and have no complaints about comfort. In fact I can wear these with glasses.

Yeah, for gaming, the DT880 is really good. It's soundstage isn't great but it's imaging, both L/R and F/B, is insanely good. If you are going to say best for both music and gaming under $500, give me a Hifiman Sundara, an AKG K712 Pro, or a Shure 1840 any day over the DT880 since each have a better balance of imaging and soundstage and just sound better in general. The DT880 is probably overall the best at $200, but there is just too much competition once you double that budget.

This mod works surprisingly well. It did not turn these headphones to HD600, but...

I'm 200% sure that there is no better sounding headphones for $129. You have to pay double at least if you try to find better headphones.

K7xx under $200. Need an amp though. Do these 58x really not need an amp? They say that for a lot of hp even the k7xx. But really I've only experienced that with ones that are meant and specced for mobile use

Are these the exact same in terms of comfort as the 600/650, worse? Or better? Closer to the 598s?

The 600/650s were redic for me. Not just the pressure on the sides but the band at the top. 599/598 not bad really at all
