Got these for about $140 or $150 about 18 months ago IIRC. The headband feels cheap and plasticy, but…

Comfortable and good balanced sound. Can't go wrong at this price point.
Thank you. Bought mine three weeks ago for $150 and I'm going to try to get the difference refunded.

Update: Drop refunded me the price difference with an email request.
I have both and I would say the X2 are better for gaming/movies as they have more bass, soundstage is great, and you can slap a v-moda boompro mic and you're good to go.

The 58X are better for music imo as they are more detailed and have amazing mids, so it's preference, really. I always switch out between the 2 headphones.

This headphone is nothing special until you mod it with felt mod and omg sound is a lot cleaner and more natural neutral sound, the bass is way more cleaner....I do have a dac but you don't need it for this headphone. I am just trying to help those who are trying the get the best sound out of their headphone.

I've had these headphones sometime and seen the YouTube video. Any recommendation on where to get or what material you used? You think I can just remove the foam? Or would that be a bad idea as dust can get into the driver? Thank you.

They are 150 ohm how do you not need a dac/amp for these???
Tons of motherboards (and phones too) with decent built-in DACs and amplifiers these days which support up-to 600 ohms headphones.

Take less than 1 min to do, remove cover and foam stick the furniture felt in the middle where the hole is and you are done. Put everything back and you will be amazed. Felt funiture you can buy it at walmart or even dollar tree. Here is a sample link if it dont get remove, you only need 2 piece one for left and one for right.

I have an original pair of 580s, purchased ~20 years ago. Love them so much in fact, that I loved them probably to death. I killed the headband, and the part that connects the headband to the cups. Makes me so sad, and I've never been able to find a replacement part for them, and don't want to throw em out.

These things are the bee's knees.

Wait what? Link to how to do this?
You can google "HD58x felt mod" and you can find some guides but the gist of it is, you remove the grill and the foam which exposes the driver. Then you want to cover the driver with a thin piece of breathable material like felt or coffee filter. You would cut out the material in a circle just like the driver, then you would use adhesive to attach it. I used 3M double sided tape (this one [homedepot.com]). I cut out little circular slivers and just made sure the outer perimeter of the material was attached to the driver. I believe i used this video [youtube.com] in the past to guide me.

The whole point of this is because the driver has a hole in it and if you remove the foam, then dust will get inside the drivers. Hence, you attach a breathable "filter" (like the foam it came with) to stop dust from accumulating inside the driver and potentially damaging it. Removing the foam basically takes out the muffle and it makes it sound more like the 6xx I believe. One caveat is there is a slight decrease in the bass as that is what the foam helped accentuate. Here's the weird part though. I went back and forth A-B testing with and without the foam. And after a couple of times, I ended up with using the material over the driver, and keeping the foam. I swear, the muffle was gone and the bass level was preserved. Not sure if it was because my material of choice or because it's all just a placebo and i'm going crazy, but it works for me.

K712 is legit. I love its signature sound. The K712 sounds great with clarity from mid to highs but so thin for the low frequencies and the lower highs around 5k needs a bit tweaking. Not sure about Sundara and I don't trust the reviews enough to get a pair due to my past experience with Hifiman brand. Never tried the Shure1840 because Shure is well known for the IEMs but not sure about their headphones, maybe I'll pickup a pair to see.
Yeah, it's that frequency response, really good imaging, and wide soundstage that makes the K712 so good for FPS gaming. The bass is quite recessed and rolls off super hard though so they aren't my favorite for music. They still have a very nice, chill sound. The 1840 are the flattest headphones I have ever heard. They seem to be the masters of mastering music. They have a slightly narrower soundstage than the K712 but every bit as good of imaging. They have good sub-bass extension and nothing is recessed. I think many would find them boring to actually listen to but there is a good chance your music was mastered with a Shure 1540, 1840, or the AT ATH-AD2000x. The Sundara has a mostly neutral FR with really good, consistent, and even bass and treble extension. They are extremely precise, with very clean and super fast attack and decay, and every bit as detailed as the 1840 with none of the 1840's smoothness. This makes microdetails extremely obvious on the Sundara. This sharpness can be somewhat harsh and weird to some people who aren't used to planars but I personally love it. I'd say they are basically the exact antithesis to the HD 6XX.

I have both, and the 599 is not even in the same class. This is a great price.

K7xx under $200. Need an amp though. Do these 58x really not need an amp? They say that for a lot of hp even the k7xx. But really I've only experienced that with ones that are meant and specced for mobile use

Are these the exact same in terms of comfort as the 600/650, worse? Or better? Closer to the 598s?

The 600/650s were redic for me. Not just the pressure on the sides but the band at the top. 599/598 not bad really at all
I haven't head the K7xx personally but they do seem like they would be very high up the list of good gaming headphones. The seem to have a really good soundstage and solid imaging but the DT880 have such precise imaging for directional awareness that they just don't need a whole lot of soundstage for distance awareness. They need more power than just about anything that's ever existed to get that sound though. The 58X definitely benefit from an amp but it's not the huge difference that you get from an HD6XX. If I were to put percentages to it, I'd say you get 80% from the 58X "un-amped" and like 45% from a 6XX. The clamp force is similar to the 6XX so you will probably find them uncomfortable for a long time until you just kind of... don't.
