Got these for about $140 or $150 about 18 months ago IIRC. The headband feels cheap and plasticy, but…

Comfortable and good balanced sound. Can't go wrong at this price point.

Thank you. Bought mine three weeks ago for $150 and I'm going to try to get the difference refunded.

Update: Drop refunded me the price difference with an email request.

I have both and I would say the X2 are better for gaming/movies as they have more bass, soundstage is great, and you can slap a v-moda boompro mic and you're good to go.

The 58X are better for music imo as they are more detailed and have amazing mids, so it's preference, really. I always switch out between the 2 headphones.

Oh man i paid the full price 2 weeks ago.. they sound pretty good though. Not an audiophile at all but they sound very neutral without an equalizer imo, not a very 'wide' sound either

I had one of these and sold it in favor of the Shp9500. These are fine, but super tight, narrow side stage, and a hair muddy compared to the Philips. Save your money and get something better for half the price.

K712 is legit. I love its signature sound. The K712 sounds great with clarity from mid to highs but so thin for the low frequencies and the lower highs around 5k needs a bit tweaking. Not sure about Sundara and I don't trust the reviews enough to get a pair due to my past experience with Hifiman brand. Never tried the Shure1840 because Shure is well known for the IEMs but not sure about their headphones, maybe I'll pickup a pair to see.
I was looking at the 58X but I've owned the 6XX and just returned the 599 SE's from Amazon's $99 deal last year.

After poking around I just bought the AKG 712 Pro's for $243 shipped from a German vendor (www.thomannmusic.com [thomannmusic.com]). Felt it was worth $100 extra to try them out after reading a bunch of glowing reviews. Haven't owned an AKG before and I feel like I've tried enough Sennheisers for a lifetime. I get they may work great in certain situations but overall I've been underwhelmed and found them overly cold and flat.

I've also owned:

Beyer DT990 Pro - couldnt stand the treble boost, became hard to listen over long duration of play time.

SHP9500 - I really like this Philips plus the Fidelio X2's, though for a bargain the SHP9500 is as good as it gets under $100.

Monolith M570 - Got a great deal on this as open box ($120 ish) on SD in the spring and love it as a different type of planar experience.

DT990 and DT770 are both extreme with the treb. That's why I returned them. The only thing worth buying is the DT880 600 ohm version. You can EQ a bit at around 5k-6k and you'll be good or just leave it alone, it's not that bright like DT990/DT770.

I have an audiophile buddy who owns these and says they can't be beat at $120-$130; he claims that you probably need to spend close to $1000 to get a noticeable difference (for a non-audiophile). I can't figure out what I would use them for since they are open back but I've been convinced to give them a shot.

How so? Could you elaborate?
I have the 558, 560, 598, 599, 58X, and 650. All have the basic "Sennheiser signature sound" or mid to high accent or clarity. The 500 series are all very similar, with the exception of the 599 and 560. They are both slightly brighter sounding, with the 560 being a little more so than the 599. The 500 series build is all plastic, very light, and very comfortable. They all also use the 2.5mm twist lock single connector. They also require some tools for disassembly beyond just pads. Since they all use a single line in, they can't be used with a balanced amp without extensive disassembly and internal rewiring. The 600 series, 58X, 600, 6XX, 650, and 660 have a steel headband main beam, and can all be completely disassembled and reassembled without any tools, (simply snap together), and since they have a separate connector for each driver can be run balanced using the connector of your choice or need on the terminal end. All of those saying that they prefer the single line either just don't understand this or have no use for it. That is understandable and simply a matter of choice. None are especially bass heavy, but the 600 series seem to all have cleaner sub-bass response. The 58X is one of my favorites, and I use the Dekoni velour pads that Drop sells regularly for $20. Their sound is not that much different from the stock pads, except that they have a pleather ring on the inside that seems to boost the mid-bass response a bit, and makes the higher frequencies a bit more forward. I also run them without the external foam behind the drivers. I don't use an expensive DAC and amp. I use either a Schiit stack or the Drop Grace/O2 combo. I also use a little Soundblaster for portable use. Although you can run any of them without an amp, don't let anyone tell you there is no benefit to doing so. There is also more than just impedance to consider when deciding on power requirements. You also need to consider the sensitivity. The 58X is probably one of the biggest bargains out there at $120. I am a huge fan of Sennheiser, but they are not the only ones I own or the only ones to consider. If you are on a tight budget, or only really just want one set, or are just starting to put a collection together, this deal should be at the top of your list. This price is considerably better than both the Black Friday and Prime Day latest offerings.

Can you please compare the 58X to the 650/6XX, which can sometimes be found on sale BF for a bit more? And what else do you own/worth considering outside Sennheiser? Thanks.

How does this compare with HD 599?
They are pretty dang similar. The 599 clamps a lot less and is overall more comfortable and the cable terminates in the left earcup vs. both earcups. 58X sound is jusssssst a hair smoother and a little fuller in the midbass and down.

I've had both but still have the 599.

I have both. They don't tune quite the same imo. The 599 has bigger sound stage but the quality of mids for 58X and 6XX are just noticeable better.

When was that? I am trying out a Philips 9600 that I found on SD around Prime Day. Would love to hear review and feedback from people who own both the Sennheiser HD 599 and Philips 9600
How much you get those Philips for and how you liking them so far (music, gaming, movies/tv)? Thanks, Erlich

Do you primarily use them for a specific activity or do you mean in general, cause I don't think I've ever heard Philips > 58x (except maybe for gaming)? For music, most people say they're not even in the same league.

In regards to the Philips headphones, do you mean for all-around use? I've read the SHP9500 kill it in terms of value, comfort, and gaming w/ the V-Moda Boom mic, but for overall use the Fidelio are worth the upgrade cause of how much better they sound for media such as music and movies due to the increased bass and how "fun" they are. It's difficult to imagine the lack of bass and increased treble would really make them a great all-arounder for those who don't have like half a dozen options and just want a single pair of cans to use, then again I've never tried them. My concern is comfort, which is by far the most important single aspect for me because after a couple of hours, every single pair of headphones I've tried hurt my ears or make them sweat (usually both), except for the Bose QC-35, plus I also wear glasses.

It's unbelievable how badly Philips dropped the ball on both the SHP9600 AND Fidelio X3, especially considering how much praise their predecessors have received over the years. If I'd known, I woulda bought them when they were still frequently being sold by Amazon.com as the seller @ $50 and $100, respectively, but I'm frugal and stubborn so don't wanna overpay now. Was set on the 58x until I just found out it's a freaking 2.5mm, and I don't want a modmic. Think I may just end up picking the PC37X on BF since they're supposedly more comfortable and there's no way to justify > 50% increase in price for the slightly improved bass of the PC38X, even tho I might end up paying more to get them a year later unless they have the same $20 off (altho not sure if that was a Thanksgiving deal or they just dropped the new user discount to $10). First world problems...

I use the Philips for some music, but mostly calls and gaming. The wide stage helps for positioning and they don't clamp on my head to cause discomfort after half an hour.

The 58xs sound great for movies with explosions, but everything is a little more... Narrow? Condensed? I sold them a while ago because they didn't get any use.

I also kind of hate the Y cable vs standard 3.5 on the left side. minor detail but it adds up
