I absolutely love my Series S, but one bummer is that of the disparity between sale prices of physical media vs prices of digital. I see that Best Buy has Borderlands 3 for sale at $9.99 often, meanwhile, it is full price digitally.
I am aware that this is what I signed up for when I decided to purchase an all-digital console (I have an 18-month old that tries to jam things everywhere) but this can be so frustrating.
You can join and get the first month for $1, but the smarter strategy would be to load up on 3 years of Xbox Live Gold before getting the first month of Game Pass Ultimate (GPU) so that everything converts 1:1 and you end up with 3 years of GPU.
$181 for 3 years of Xbox Live Gold and the conversion easily outweighs the value of $526 if you paid for GPU straightup

I was in the same boat as you but with the digital ps5. I ended up lucking out and finding a ps5 with a disc drive.
Personally, I think that the console price should be a lot less since they will be making up all profits on the back end by controlling the online store prices.

Digital stuff has excellent sales sometimes and physical stuff you have to wait for the prices to get low.

Luckily, in recent years so much money is generated from in-game sales. So it's not even a matter of moving physical inventory for shelf space anymore. Even digital games will eventually get dropped just to squeeze that last amount of profit. Whereas Nintendo games, even though they've shown to be kind of greedy, don't go on the same price drop because there's not as much in game purchases. At least, I feel like that's the answer. But it is an awesome time for Xbox games I hope it doesn't change

Do people like the game pass? I see Fallen Order is on there now. Is it worth the $15 a month?

Game Pass is what made the Series S viable for me. It has a majority of the games I want to play, including this one, so it was worthwhile.
I still don't play video games that often and it annoys me to no end that Kingdom Hearts 3 is rendered at 720p, but otherwise Game Pass is what makes the Series S a consideration and the PS5 Digital Edition not so much so.
If you are thinking about picking up Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order you can get the deluxe version from Eneba for $18.27, no VPN required as it's a global key.

I bought qty 3 of the Brazil 1 year xbox live passes ($30 each) and did the $1 dollar conversion so i have 3 years of ultimate for like $91 bucks. Best deal ever in gaming. I do believe the 9.99/mo is worth it alone for the 1st party games that come day 1 (flight sim, halo infinite are the ones i'm looking forward to). I've played so many good games from gamepass and discovered some gems like a plagues tale, Jedi fallen order, battletoads and neir automata. There's a reason why gamepass has all the memes and why it is being talked about a lot. I'm definitely keeping the ultimate subscription after my 3 years lapses.
Easily the best value in gaming even if you're paying full price each month. So much content, everyone is sure to find a game that they'll enjoy.
I'm fairly confident I'm not going to get to all the games I want to play since there definitely are a lot and the Series S can only store so many at a time, but if I was paying ~ $15 individually for games like this on PS5 that I have interest in I'd probably end up spending the same amount or less.
I did have two 1-year Xbox Live Gold cards lying around that converted 1:1 to GPU and it is a great value, but if I found a PlayStation 5 with a Blu-Ray drive beforehand I would have probably went that direction. It's frustrating since games with PS5 optimizations like this will play slightly better compared to the Series S, but I'd be buying games that I already have access to on Game Pass.
