This is the cheapest ever for a great general purpose zoom for the Sony FE mount. You need EDU to get the deal. If you have BH's Taboo card, there is also no tax. This is cheaper than used market price.

I'm sure other camera stores like Adorama has the same EDU deal if you prefer another store.

The Sony is more versatile and rugged. I'd go with the Sony unless one absolutely positively needs the wider aperture.

Tamron one is more portable and amazing value, but for the price on this deal, the Sony is a better deal today. A more versatile zoom option if you just want to know which one is harder to score at a good price and don't care about the size differences.

Also… I think the Tamron has lost some edge with this year's direct competing Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 which is smaller and more portable for a relatively similar price. You can see in demonstrations, there's almost no difference between Sigma's lens at 70mm and Tamron's at 75mm in viewing area. Yet the Sigma is notably smaller, has more consistent focus pulls, and feels a little more durable.

Personally, I care most about size so I've owned all these lenses and prefer Sigma's. Tamron is the best middle ground and cheapest so I still love it, it's overall the best day to day value. Sony's is more powerful range but tends to be overpriced so only buy it on this deal and if you don't mind the large size compared to the others. I personally don't ever use this Sony lens anymore but only due to size of the lens… I like minimalist setup where I can find it.

Any deals on the 24-70mmf2.8 sony g lens. The cheapest I have seen was $1600ish for that lens.

I believe the Sigma isn't weather sealed? Or rather not as much as the Tamron is what I understood in the reviews.

818 is really a great price. Hopefully they will still be this low this year. Thanks.

Get a Tamron 28-200. Larger aperture in 28~100mm. You lose 24~28mm and OSS, but the additional 100~200mm range is well worth it.

Neither are thoroughly weather sealed in the same ways as high end lenses, but the Tamron is sealed officially yes. If you tend to let your lenses get some water on them, get the Tamron. The Sigma has only the Mount seal.

Does the zoom ring turn smoothly on your copy? Mine is a bit sticky
