Its an 8 direction cheap sanwa clone, with a 4 direction restrictor gate. Very "loose" / not for the serious gamer for sure.

I replaced my stick on a pacman 8-1 partycade with one from Tornado Terry on ebay [ebay.com]. True 4-way, stiffer spring and feels arcade-authentic. Not to mention no perceived dead zones due to the low quality stick.
The license strictly prohibits doing that. You could always approach the big names and see just how much they want for a full size license. If you don't like the $300 price you sure gonna hate the $2500+ price
No I hear you, and at the original price points they originally came out with ($299 was average) the newer pricing structures PRICE them as a premium product... and yet come with less-than-desirable quality hardware.

I'm not even talking the particle board construction, just the buttons and sticks.

Luckily with a little [reddit.com] DIY you can improve [reddit.com] them with arcade quality parts.

They do fill a nostalgia niche, but I wonder how much longer they can do that, given they are effectively pricing themselves out of the casual market, and now sit dollar-wise more at the iircade or legends ultimate end of the spectrum.

Time will tell if they are successful.

Anyone know if this uses a pac-man style stick (registers only 4 directiond) or more generic stick (registers 8 directions)?

After the Arcade1Up price increases earlier this year bringing most cabs to above 400 and higher (pinball that once went for $550 is now going for $979 [qvc.com] ).... the price for this if you are looking is not terrible. Again this is in the context / broader discussion of the price increases.

Pre price increases, clearance prices would be sometimes only north of $100... but none of us have a time machine sadly.
In short, if you want to buy from a reputable seller, have it available for purchase online, then this is good for current market conditions [reddit.com].

Would be neither nostalgic nor authentic without a genuine CRT display.
